Its good to stay current but some "new" things or ideas are not "better" things or ideas. If I am paying for the wedding, there are some off the wall ideas that I would have to say "no way" to.

All kidding aside, I so admire the people who keep their weddings and receptions modest and affordable. No matter how much money the family has, it could always be put to better use (charity, college fund, etc.) than a costly gown to be worn once, an over the top venue and food that half the folks attending won't like no matter how good it tastes! I heard about a wedding where the bride wore a gown that she got at a thrift shop. It was designer, only a few years old and she had it professionally cleaned and altered at a fraction of the cost of a new one. They were married in their little church and had the reception in the church hall (which is what a lot of people used to do btw). All the ladies of the church and family and friends brought their favorite dishes and it was a yummy looking spread. This reception was more about the community honoring them as a newly married couple and not about them spending money to "pay back" guests for attending. And it wasn't because they could not have afforded the big "shindig". It was about them wanting it to be "real".
I recently attended a wedding where all the flowers were from the gardens of friends and family and the grandmother had made the cake. I just love homey stuff like that! So much heart and real effort on the part of those attending - not just money shelled out to planners and caterers. And, yes, I love the donut cake. Simple, modest and yummy. Here's what I like to see at a wedding -

Simple can still be lovely, but it is an important event and should reflect that.

ITA with you, collie. I guess what I'm saying is (and this is totally JMO) to me the fact that people you know or are related to have taken the time and made the effort to decorate, bake, cook, sew, flower arrange, etc. for your special day shows how truly important it is. And again, to me, spending lots of money does not necessarily do that. People putting their hearts into their efforts (even if they appear to be a bit amateurish or simple) does. But that's me and that's the type of wedding DH and I had many years ago. And people still reminisce about it because it was so different from the standard sort of wedding all our friends were doing. It was a labor of love on the part of so many of our nearest and dearest.
