When we were little girls, my sister and I loved when our parents went to weddings as they usually brought home a piece of wedding cake wrapped in a napkin with the bride & groom's name and wedding date on it. There were usually matches with the names and date, too.

Donuts instead of a wedding cake?????{#emotions_dlg.ohmy}

I had matches, napkins and drink stirrers with our names and date on them at my wedding!

Wedding cakes now-a-days can be soooooo expensive, and they aren't very elaborate, either. I might have a 'faux' very elaborate cake, (for photos) and then have cupcakes with and/or without boxes; and/or boxes with slices of sheet cake to take home. Does that make sense?

My husbands niece did this! I suggested it to my son but he did not like the idea.

I had a very elaborate 6 tier cake with pink roses. It cost about $75 in 1974.

Its been a long time since I have seen a receiving line at a wedding. I do feel the couple should go around and greet all the guests in some way.

According to the knot - receiving lines are also no longer necessary. I don't know if they are having one or not.

I like this 'donut' cake! As I said before, many of the cakes I've seen now a days are soooo plain, maybe with one real flower plopped on top or somewhere on the side of the cake. Wouldn't take much time frosting it, for sure. (LOL..........) This 'donut' cake might look more Summer wedding-'ish' if maybe the color of the flowers and/or the donuts were white, pastel, or whatever colors in the wedding theme. This one pictured could be an Autumn wedding look. Love it!

p.s. And, also, remember that the donuts could be frosted with white frosting with sugar coating, or whatever color of the theme of the wedding.........Smile In fact, they probably have iridescent white sugar coatings/sprinkles now-a-days.......

The last relatively plain wedding cake I saw was ours and that was in 1972. Wedding cakes today are elaborate in comparison to the traditional white wedding cakes of yesteryear.

Personally unless it's an extremely casual, informal wedding I do not like cupcakes in lieu of a wedding cake. Donuts would really look cheap. The one pictured looks more appropriate for a bridal breakfast.

We were at a wedding in Bermuda this weekend. The cake was gorgeous with seashells and pink "sand."
