Yeah, no.  I don't think the color of a dress will foretell the happiness and/or longevity in the marriage.

I have never attended a wedding where the mother of the bride wore black.  The colors I usually see the mothers of the bride wear are jewel tones like emerald, sapphire and ruby red.  I have also seen mothers of the bride wearing magenta, gold and pink dresses.

There are a lot of darker colors that you can wear so that you can match the bridal party but, I personally feel that black should not be worn by the mother of the bride or groom. I don't even understand why people choose black or black/white bridal party colors. It's fine being worn by the guests because it's a formal color.  It's supposed to be one of the happiest days of their lives so, I think there are so many other beautiful colors that can be worn to celebrate your daughter or son's big day.

The comment about the mother buying a yellow dress and the bride and mother of the bride making her return it is absurd. It's not like she picked out a Rainbow dress with a big hat and a matching umbrella. Maybe that's what she looked nice in. I would want to go along with what the bridal party is wearing, but there's no way in the world a bride and her mother would tell me what to wear, unless I asked for their opinion which, I never would.
