AMERICAN SCENES IN THE 1930'S AND 1940'S

Most are from the Thirties, a few from the Forties.  They're pretty crisp vintage photos;  some have been colorized, but not too obnoxiously so ( in my opinion).

Love to see old newspaper offices.  Stop the presses!

There's something about old, isolated filling stations that is so "moody"--

Love the cars, in California--

This shot could almost be from an old movie!  Pretty timeless moment for two people, somewhere....

Great pics @Oznell

Would be fun to try and add some dialogue to this scene...

Love them all but especially the kitchen photo, what a great time period.

Ha, right, @Lucky Charm --  it looks like it could have been a "fraught" moment for them-- hope it all worked out well.

Hoping there wasn't any dialog along the lines of,  "Will I ever see you again?"......

@beckyb1012 ,  love it, that kitchen killed me too.  Also, isn't it interesting that even though it's captioned that it is a Senator's wife, Mrs. Claude Pepper--  it still looks like a pretty bare-bones, utilitarian kitchen.  The kitchens of the Thirties and Forties tended to be like that, even in fancy houses, come to think of it.

In one of the "Thin Man" movies,  Nick and Nora Charles go back to the very substantial family home in California, and the kitchen that they have a late-night snack in is very unpretentious, considering the house...  I like that.

Wonderful photos! I tried to picture my parents (born in 1917 & '21) and how they would have fit into to the photos age-wise. Thanks for posting, @Oznell

Gotta love the idea of a senator's wife actually cooking! Simpler times.

@Oznell

So beautiful!  Your 8th picture down of Tanforan Race Track San Bruno CA is glamorous and brought me back home!  We lived about 2 miles away in the adjacent town and drove by it often until it burned down in '64.

Became a shopping mall.  About a couple blocks away is the one of two See's factories.

And maybe a little... Hopperesque?

@Oznell Thank you so very much for taking us back in time.  That is just it, seeing pictures before a person's birth makes you realize how time just keeps on marching along.

I loved the pic of the Greyhound terminal - I remember when young how excited I was to travel on a double decker bus.

In the kitchen picture what struck me is, how neatly pressed her dress and apron are. Not like these days, we cook in our PJ's or underwear Smiley Happy
