Re: We get to a point where we don't want to change.

I totally get it. I'm happy with the way things are. Technology? Just not into the latest and greatest. I don't have a smart phone, I don't feel the need to have the "best" of anything. The only thing I would like (and this is not within my control) is an internet provider that actually provided me the service I pay for! We pay a lot of money each month and our service is getting worse. They don't care because they know they are our only option. (Trust me I checked, I'd get rid of them if I could.)

My friends and I say that we don't like change because as we get older the change is often not for the better!! Technology is good and also very bad. Still having teens, we see the negative side of all the communication. It is a full time job to supervise everything!!

I agree. There is a huge component of "negative" in all of this new technology. I'm watching it in my grandchildren all the time and it's very upsetting. They can be in a room with us for hours and have absolutely nothing to say because their noses are constantly into their phones, they are not even aware we are there. I don't think my girls are being forceful enough with them in monitoring all that phone usage. But it is no longer my business.

I agree to this extent; While I love my laptops and tablet, I cannot get into cellphones. Mine is in my purse, and I haven't used it in months..lol.

AND I am sick of life having become Impersonal. (Thankfully my IMMEDIATE family, DH and I get together constantly).

But I'm sick of messages via the net or facebook from most of my friends (and extended family IE cousins). Its time to get back to visits IN PERSON! For instance, I have one best friend from school that lives 3 miles from us! I haven't seen her since last year. (ridiculous!)

So I am taking the initiative and am inviting people close to me to go to dinner with my husband and I.

I agree. I have a FB page which I use to post family photos. I do not use it for conversation with anyone, except maybe a "Happy Birthday" message. And I have no idea how to use Twitter and wouldn't if I did. In fact, I think that's the worst one.

Unfortunately technology needs to be kept up-to-date. Since you have over 10,000 posts on this forum, I gather you enjoy your computer. Over time, the graphics on this site will be too advanced for an older model & you won't be able to post on this forum. Sometimes living in a capsule is comforting, but does not benefit.

Re: We get to a point where we don't want to change.

I think the saddest thing I saw (and have seen it various times in various locations since) was when a soldier was returning from war - saw his wife in the crowd at the airport, ran to her arms - and she had a video camera in front of her face filming him rather than open arms hugging him. Same at school functions, kids can't see their parent's faces watching them at the Christmas play (and I do remember how my kids scanned the audience to make sure they could see us) because everybody is snapping away with their cameras.

Sometimes the record we need to keep of an event can be the memory of actually "being" there.

Re: We get to a point where we don't want to change.

Depends on what type of change? Work related change and new staff..NOT so much..

New technology and things in life.I love it..back when I was first married and we bought our first new car nice stereo and a/c to boto lol....we thought it was something else..fast forward 32 years and we couldn't imagine cars that had bluetooth capability..internet and text message..much less GPS and back up system..all types of technology that we could not of imagined. Even computerized engines and tire sensors..

Heck when VCR's came out and our whole town was buying them at Montgomery Ward's as they were the cheapest at $429!!! Our Cordless Phones..Answering Machines..I had family who thought we had money LOL..then the first flat screen TV...now the large smart TV..

We paid like $1700 for our first desktop computer in Wards again.

Christmas 25 years ago for hubby's birthday I bought him a huge wooden stand up stereo ..today you can buy double the watts for 20% of the size of the system..but he uses spotify (sp) and youtube along with the cable for music..I can see why music sales are down..

Cell phones and Kindles..I was sitting by the pool this summer with my cell phone and Kindle thinking 20 years ago ..who could of imagined? I got my first cell phone in 1998..but before that we had a car phone that was $199 from Sears and it was like 75 cents a minute and was in a huge case. I commuted at night for work and hubby wanted me safe...In 1998 I got my first normal cell phone with ATT and it technology has just progressed so much.

I love the technology and change..and I laugh when I was a kid listening to my mother and grandmother talk about all the ""modern"" things like Tv's and a/c..all luxury items..

Re: We get to a point where we don't want to change.

Coupon Queen, my family were big Montgomery Ward shoppers as well. I remember our first console color tv - the first thing we watched was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I remember when we upgraded from a four track to an eight track player. Woo Hoo - bring on Glen Campbell and Hank Williams!

I think the difference is, when we got a VCR we didn't watch twenty movies in a row. When we got a cell phone, we didn't stay on it non-stop, we made a call and went on about our day. Now it seems people are glued to their devices and feel lost without them. Less involvement with others, real people contact. I think that is what people are discussing on this very interesting thread.

Not that we don't like our big screen tvs (although believe it or not, we got our first flat screen tv for Christmas from the son because he was sick of watching baseball at our house and all the teams uniforms were blurry shades of red, regardless their real colors. ){#emotions_dlg.laugh}

And I double dare anybody who tries to take away the over the stove microwave from my husband - he has to heat up his coffee immediately after pouring it from the Mr. Coffee - says he wants it really hot.

I have a brand new desktop computer with all the highest grade components I just bought directly from Dell. It's got an Intel i7 processor, 1 tb hd, 64 bit, 8 mgs ram, and the only thing "old" on it is Windows 7 instead of 8. I don't know what you're talking about re an "older model." Older model what?

I have two role models in my life who are about to be 100 years old. Both have kept up with modern technology and when I complain about new things, they have often told me "use it or lose it." I welcome change in my life and hope I always will......

That's wonderful and quite amazing. They are completely computer literate with all the latest technology, I assume? And iPads, iPods, Smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, also?
