ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — The tourism office of Ithaca, New York, is waving the white flag on winter and advising visitors to its website to check out the Florida Keys instead.

VisitIthaca.com's home page displays Sunshine State vacation photos and provides links to the website for tourism information about the Florida Keys and Key West.

The top of the Ithaca page reads: "That's it. We surrender. Winter, you win. Key West anyone?"

Referring to "this ridiculously stupid winter," the Ithaca website suggests visiting the Florida Keys this week and returning "when things thaw out."

Ithaca and the rest of upstate New York have been in the grips of a snowy and brutally cold winter. The most recent cold snap sent temperatures plunging as low as 28 degrees below zero in the Adirondacks early Tuesday.

I think this is funny and I am sure many towns have given up this winter. We have had some of this in Jersey but nothing like you guys up there. Spring will be here soon and people will return to Ithaca

Way to go NY!!!! Wish I were in the Keys this week. At least we don't have all the snow ... just ice.

A few states are dealing with this recent avalanche in humorous ways, and a local police department is no exception: {#emotions_dlg.lol}

(I may have already posted this, but couldn't find it.) Wink

The town of Merrimack, NH issued an arrest warrant for Punxsutawney Phil on Facebook:

"We know we are a day early, however we here at Merrimack Police felt compelled to let the public know that there is a warrant for Punxsutawney Phil! We have received several complaints from the public that this little varmint is held up in a hole, warm and toasty. He told several people that Winter would last 6 more weeks, however he failed to disclose that it would consist of mountains of snow! If you see him, do not approach him as he is armed and dangerous. Call Merrimack Police, we will certainly take him into custody!"

Here is the PA governor's response to the arrest warrant:

Punxsutawney Phil is not just some average rodent – he is an American legend and Pennsylvania hero,” Wolf wrote on Facebook.

The department posted the arrest warrant on their Facebook page Tuesday. The post has been shared nearly 10,000 times and has made headlines across the country.

"He told several people that winter would last 6 more weeks. However, he failed to disclose that it would consist of mountains of snow," the post reads.

Phil has been making predictions on February 2 in Punxsutawney since 1886.

“We will do what is necessary to protect our beloved weather-predicting groundhog," Wolf wrote. "The Merrimack Police Department should drop their cold-hearted plan to arrest Phil. I hope cooler heads prevail before this situation really heats up."

Wolf also called for Gov. Maggie Hassan to intervene.

“If necessary, I will ask the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle to increase security at Phil’s stump or place Phil in protective custody until this outrageous warrant is rescinded,” Wolf said on his Facebook page.

Hassan responded on Twitter.

She tweeted, "All he has to do to make this go away is step outside and avoid his shadow...expecting more snow this weekend."

hahahha!

As a PA resident and Punxsutawney Phil supporter, '...we shall fight them on the seas (in PA??), we shall fight them on the beaches (well, we do have lakes and creeks), we shall fight them near Phil's home, and we shall NEVER SURRENDER!'

BTW..he almost always predicts 6 more weeks of winter. It IS Pa after all....

I have seen a few signs in peoples yard calling "Uncle". It's really bad up here and single digit temperatures, sometime even below 0. Worst winter I can remember.

Jimmy the ground hog in Sun Prairie Wisconsin let the Mayor know how he felt about the whole Winter thing. He bit him on the ear! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}
