I check caller ID if I'm close by and then turn on the fax machine if it's a telemarketer I recognize. Some just won't give up when you tell them not to call. I had one that started calling 7 times a day after I asked them not to call.

The best thing I did was discontinue my home phone and use my cell exclusively. All I ever got were telemarketers on the home phone. Now it is peace and quiet in the evenings. And it's a savings of about $45 per month. More money to buy more useless stuff!

I will ask very nicely if they will please remove my name from their call list. There is no need to be rude-these people are just trying to make a living. I have two nephews that did telemarketing as a PT college job. Believe me, if you're nice, they remove your number-if you're rude or nasty-you'll always be on the list.

If you really don't want to be bothered, get caller ID and just don't answer if you don't recognize the caller.

I generally just tell them I'm poor, and that if I sign up for [fill in the blank] I won't be able to pay for it.

That usually cuts things short.

I absolutely agree. Also, not to be judgmental, but it sort of says something about some of the people, that it is easier for them to be rude than to be firm or forthright.

Exactly. It's things like this that are one of the reasons people are so mean. They think they are being funny but in reality it is nothing short of mean and rude. These people are trying to make a living just like everyone else.
