I love self-checkout but think they should leave a couple manned lanes for the elderly and SCO-challenged. Otherwise, the SCO area will be gummed-up with folks needing assistance.
Totally agree @ValuSkr .

I've had to educate several checkers on produce items! Sometimes they look a little embarrassed to ask, but some seem genuinely appreciative of the help!

Or god forbid, fall out of the cart.

I'm not surprised by all self check outs. I don't think it is fair. I have a job, I don't want to be a cashier (or anything else) in my off itme. THey should give 10% off if you ring up your own order.

@SDRM I agree, give me a discount. Today I ran to walmart afterwork...shelves were spoty, 3 checkouts open +the self check.
I had to do self check out because I had several frozen items and I would have had melted ice cream, etc if I had waited in line...so irritating.

If WM goes to all self checkouts, I doubt it will stay in business. Seems they have been making one bad decision after another for many years.
I rarely go there because there's only one live cashier and I refuse to check out myself. I don't work for WM.

My reply is not meant for anyone in particular, but I don't get the quip of "I don't work for Wal-Mart" or "I'm not a cashier" , etc. Well, I'm not either, but then again, I'm not a gas station attendant but I do have to pump my own gas (as I don't live in NJ). ⛽
I can appreciate it if you just don't want to do it, or physically can't, so yes perhaps shop elsewhere. I wonder if you see an item on the floor in one of the aisles, like a loaf of bread say, are you one of those people who would pick it up and place it back on the shelf? 🍞. Or one of those who would step right over it? After all, you probably weren't the one who dropped it....or even maybe you were......but you're not a janitor. 🗑

Funny you should say this (bolded by me). I'm one of those freaks of nature who WILL pick up merchandise from the floor and find where it goes on the table. I also tend to face the shelves, like if I take something to purchase I will make sure I leave the shelf neat and faced.
I've never done self check-out, however, but I'm happy to neaten things up.
I tend to see those who will just drop merchandise on the floor, or knock it off the shelf, and leave it there like the ones who will spit gum, or toss ciggie butts (or whatever), on the ground in the parking lot. Or, another peeve of mine - leave the shopping cart where it will run into peoples' cars, instead of either putting it in a cart corral or at least putting the front wheels up over a curb so that it can't roll.

@chickenbutt Amen! At the Wal-Mart I go to anyway, they removed the little machines on the poles in various locations in the store where you can scan the UPC code and check the price before you decide if you want to buy it. They said the reason being that if the price was too much and the person decided they didn't want it, they would leave the item right there on the floor. It became a mess for employees to have to clean up. So now because of some lazy, thoughtless people, it spoils it for the rest of us.
And back along the lines of doing the work of checking yourself out.....even at Publix, if they are shorthanded, I have no problem bagging my own groceries if no bag boy is around. Otherwise the cashier has to do it and just holds up the line. It's not below me to bag my own food. 🏪
