@chickenbutt   Amen!  At the Wal-Mart I go to anyway, they removed the little machines on the poles in various locations in the store where you can scan the UPC code and check the price before you decide if you want to buy it.  They said the reason being that if the price was too much and the person decided they didn't want it, they would leave the item right there on the floor.  It became a mess for employees to have to clean up.  So now because of some lazy, thoughtless people, it spoils it for the rest of us.

And back along the lines of doing the work of checking yourself out.....even at Publix, if they are shorthanded, I have no problem bagging my own groceries if no bag boy is around.  Otherwise the cashier has to do it and just holds up the line.  It's not below me to bag my own food. 🏪

I LOVE doing my own bagging!   Fact of the matter is - I bag a lot better than most people who get paid to do it.   I was never one who could just stand there while one person works when I could help out.

I have to say - I get so tired of asking them (especially since things changed where you can't bring your own bags - hoping that changes soon here) to please not put the bread in with the cold and frozen stuff!   Wouldn't that just be common sense?  /rhetorical cuz I guess it's not!  Smiley Mad

Half the time, when I am not able to bag it myself, I end up going to a place out of the way and re-bagging half of it before I leave the store.

I do that, too!  They sometimes put soap products in with the food....they put bananas 🍌 next to cold and frozen items, which turn the peels brown quicker, etc.  These are some of the reasons I don't mind self check out.  I can monitor the prices easier, too.

Re: Walmart going to all self check-outs?

Not only are there very few cashiers to check you out but today I went to pick up a small vitamin order at the 'tower'inside the store...well, they are getting rid of the 'tower' where you were able to scan you order number and the order would appear via the tower!!!

What the heck, now you have to call on your phone (which I rarely have with me) and they will bring the order, big or small to your car where you pick up groceries!!

I spoke with the associate that brought my items to me in the store because I could not call them, and we talked about the issue...she was not happy and said  the tower in the store was a real asset especially during the holidays as the customer could get their order on their own...she has a concern when the busier season gets closer.

I told her I would not order again unless the items were delivered to my home...I will not wait in my car for someone to deliver the few, small items that I typically order......walmart is going to h@ll in a handbasket....changes they make really make no sense!!

If WM goes to all self checkouts, I doubt it will stay in business.  Seems they have been making one bad decision after another for many years.

I rarely go there because there's only one live cashier and I refuse to check out myself.  I don't work for WM.

@Sunshine Kate   Our local Walmart is all self-checkout.  People gripped about it, as they do everything but the parking is as full as ever.  People adjust.

I won't use self check out anywhere.  I prefer to support those trying to work.

Re: Walmart going to all self check-outs?

Just my opinion, but it seems that WM would rather pay a cheaper hourly rate to people they hire to fill online/pickup orders than what they'd pay for cashiers. I gave up on WM for my weekly groceries last year because of the chaos and empty sheles. And now, because I will not scan and bag a cart full of items. I'll pay a little more at my local grocer where they have lanes open and employees whose job is to check out their customers, bag the items and put them in the cart. I'm 73 and I'm willing to pay for that luxury. If I need something from WM, I make sure that I only have a few items for those self-checkouts. The less I shop there, the better.

They have a lot of self check outs here and one person at a register. No cash!  I left my cart and walked out. I do not have a debit card and I do not charge groceries. The cashier was the only one who took all payments. I was not waiting in a line of ten.

Re: Walmart going to all self check-outs?

There is really a full spectrum of thoughts about this issue, isn't there? So interesting.

It's easy to shop online for most things, and I do, but it's automated and impersonal. One of the things local stores can offer is personal service. I enjoy it, myself. I don't see that there is a price difference, so it's a pleasure I can afford.

I feel that when I shop, part of what I'm buying is the items I check out with, and part of what i'm buying is the experience I have in the store. Or on the website, for that matter. I don't feel happy or satisfied when I'm in stores like Walmart, so as long as I have a choice, I will go elsewhere.

Furthermore, the point made by several about resistance to change is quite valid. But all change isn't equal--some is great, some not so much--so as long as I have a choice, I'll go where they offer live checkout.

Re: Walmart going to all self check-outs?

I think it is just a matter of time people will be complaining about more stores not just Walmart having self check out. With all the help wanted signs on every store. Self check out will be a common thing.

The Costco I go to only has 2 humans checking people out. That has been the norm for well over a year. They have 6 self check out lanes. At least the Walmart I go to has more than 2 humans checking people out.

The grocery closest to my house sometimes has one human checking people out and 6 self check out lanes.

If they can't find the people to work at the stores, the stores have to do something.

I don't shop in our local Wal-Mart, but my daughters tell me it is self checkout only now.
