Re: Walkers, Runners, and Dogs?

You might look for other places to walk. My dog (always on a leash) and I walk through a large, beautiful cemetery nearby. Yes, we have to drive there but it's safter than most streets.

Nope, that won't happen.  I'm not going to take extra time to drive somewhere else.  The beauty of walking is that I can just open the door, go and get it done.  My subdivision isn't busy and it has some challenging inclines too whereas the park trails are flat.

There are in-home walking videos if walking outside becomes unsafe. YouTube has

@JeanLouiseFinch Good for you!  This is something that I have been planning on doing but the weather has been too cold for me....I MUST start soon though!

As for the dogs, no people are mindful of the dog leash laws and I also live in an HOA community.  I do see people walking their dogs all the time.  It's a great way to meet other people & neighbors.

@Iwantcoffee - YEARS ago I owned the VHS tapes and did them for awhile.  But that's a good suggestion for when the weather is uncooperative.  Thanks.

Re: Walkers, Runners, and Dogs?

Congrats on your walking routine @JeanLouiseFinch When I walked in our subdivision with my dogs on a leash, we'd encounter dogs unleashed which definitely caused me to have some concerns.  Both my dogs were big dogs but I still didn't want to have to deal with other dogs who were not on a leash.

I never thought of having treats for them. People should, in my opinion, not allow their dogs to roam. I'm glad you weren't hurt.

@nekodaisy I'm glad you and your dog were OK. That would have been a frightening experience for me - both worrying for me and my dog being injusred.

I'm sorry for your loss of Willie. I'm sure you miss him still.

@GinaV24 - Thanks.  The treats were the first thing that came to mind because we had a friend who was a letter carrier on a walking route and he always kept some on hand.

Re: Walkers, Runners, and Dogs?

[ Edited ]

I started walking daily in 2000 for a bad back and walked so much and so far that I had times in stores people would come up to me and say hi because they recognized me from walking in front of their home.

I do not carry anything but I have been bitten twice by two dogs.  One was a German Shepherd that had been abandoned by the owner of the empty home.  A man from another home came out to help me and called animal control.  The other was a small dog that bite my ankle and was with her owner in their yard when I came walking by.

I did read once that an older man carries a can of wasp spray on all his walks because it shoots out to such a far distance.

Now I walk inside and not on the streets so I do not have to worry about the animals and other problems.

Could you safely use the school's track to walk around in?  Walkers also use malls and I even saw 2 women walking in Sam's.  We go early.

No cars, no other runners, or other walkers.  Go with a friend.  Or, make another choice from another idea.

That would be inconvenient for me.  I like to open the door and go. Our subdivision is relatively quiet and I watch which side of the street I walk on as to avoid vehicles.
