Re: WalMart, Costco and Wegmans doing away with self check-out

The best solution is to offer sufficient staffed registers to avoid long lines and long waits for those who prefer them and maintain a self check option for those who use it. Personally, I never use self check out.

I highly doubt self checkout is going away.  Our Wal-Mart has about 2 cashiers now, mostly self checkout. I use it all the time. I think they call it even between the theft and the money they save on employees, health insurance, overtime, holiday pay etc.  Machines don't need those.

I think this is a broad statement. Some stores in some locations are removing self checkouts others are not.

I was in Target today at lunch. I had some gift cards or I would have went through self-check out myself. Whenever I have a few items it's definitely the preferred option for me.

Re: WalMart, Costco and Wegmans doing away with self check-out

At the grocery store where I usually shop, I almost always use self-checkout because it is so much faster. But they only have four self-checkout stands and it is always monitored by a store clerk and sometimes two.

I never used self-checkout at Costco until recently when I only had three or four items and the regular stands were busy and no one was in the self-checkout except for the clerk, so I asked for his assistance in how to use it. Was out in no time. Like the grocery store, they only have four self-checkout stands and it's monitored all the time.

Walmart's problem is that sometimes one clerk has to keep an eye on 6-8 self-checkout stands. They report a lot of theft/failure to scan all the products.
