I never met my biological mother...she died several years before I started searching for her. She was 49.
My adopted mother died of breast cancer just before I was 9 yrs old.
My step mother wasn't into fashion.
It was only one of my grandmothers that told me one thing...
"Never wear more than one print at any time. If you do, you'll look like one of the clowns climbing out of the tiny car in the circus. It's not a good look..."

Stripes matching were a must!
"Ya gotta LOVE it."...."If you have to think that hard..." that meant "nah", "it's not right, pass it up."

Before she married, my mother was a pretty successful fashion model. She did print work in both magazine and newspaper ads. She also did some seasonal runway work for large department stores.
(We're talking about the late 1940s and early 1950s here).
I have to admit, she knew a lot about what looked right.
I recall one shopping expedition where she pointed out a large woman in a huge print dress. She pulled me aside and told me to observe .... that woman wasn't wearing that dress ... the dress was wearing her!
So .... I was always hyper-aware of whether or not prints actually flattered.
AND .... very important .... ALWAYS be sure the seams on your nylon stockings were straight!

@Tinkrbl44 That " The Clothes are Wearing YOU" concept rings true in SO many cases.
"Keep your eye out for a well dressed woman and consider how they put that look together."
My Aunt, who made many of her own clothes, was offered job as a seamstress On The Spot because the Stripes were aligined perfectly on the pants she'd made.
"Dress well. You are presenting yourself to others". I went to a convention once and was mistaken for a presenter, BY other presenters, because I wore clothes I wanted to be presentable in.
Most of the other attendants wore jeans and sneakers.

Well, that brings to mind another guideline ...
It's always better to be over-dressed than under-dressed.
So true ...

Up until my late teens my mother made many of my clothes. I would tell her what I wanted, picked out the pattern and fabric and she would take it from there. Don't remember her ever giving me advice on what to wear--LOL!
