I think that mentally, turning the dreaded 40 starts middle age.

Turning 30 for me was more dramatic than turning 40.  After 30, you can't blame it on just being "so young" anymore; you have to take full responsibility!!

i think middle age may be different for different people.  it may depend on where they are in life. healthwise, if they are young at heart.  there are things that do keep you younger.

the chronological age is higher, i think than it used to be. i would think 50 at least.

For me? I started taking full responsibility(not legally) at age 12 when I was bringing home over $100 a week, and that was the early 1950's.

Joined the US Army at 18, and there a boy turns into a man very quickly. 30 for you, 12 for me/legally at 18. We is all different, yah?

For the first time in my life I was called elderly twice this summer, I took it really hard too. I thought elderly was 70s or 80s, not under 65. Maybe medicare is the official age for elderly.

I thought middle age was 55.

It's an interesting subject.  I just read that the U.S. Census considered middle age to be 45 to 64, starting the senior years at 65, I guess.

On the other hand, there's an article in the Daily Telegraph that says that, due to people living longer and staying healthier longer, middle age can now be considered to last until 74!  This is supposedly the conclusion reached by some academics studying the topic in Europe.

What it apparently is not is the mid-way point of the average life span, as some have suggested.  I do remember being affronted at having a younger person tell me I was middle-aged when I was only 34!

I have always thought middle age is around 40.  Not sure why that would change no matter if SOME people are living longer, or not.  I think the bigger discussion right now is what is considered elderly.  This is where the discussion gets interesting.

I was taught 40 - 65.  After 65, you are considered by insurance companies to be a senior.

Big bummer, LMT...

Don't feel too bad, though. as most humans assume via appearance,  so some people are instantly considered "senior" (60's & 70's) or "elderly" (80's on up)

It's one of the reasons why I think it's helpful - and often, safer  (many criminals target those who look more vulnerable) - if our outside 'matches' our inside (a youthful heart).

Even though it shouldn't matter, things like gray/silver/white hair, dated clothing, or dressing older make a person look more mature than their chronological age.
