I had lunch with a group of female colleages last week and the topic of "middle age" came up.     A professor of mine  once said that since we're living to age 100 more often, middle age is now considered ages 33 to 66.

The 36 year old gal at the table practically flipped out .... stating that middle age is starting at about 55 to 60 years old.   LOL

Now, come on .... how can that be?    By the end of the luncheon, there were many differing opinions.

So ...... what do YOU consider middle age?   Does it start in our early thirties, or later?

It seems hard to pinpoint.  Maybe 45 and up.  Middle age has a strange connotation sometimes, IMO.

I agree. The term sounds fuddy-duddy. I haven't ever given it much thought. I may BE middle-aged, whatever criteria are used to define it, but I am lucky enough to not FEEL middle aged! Woman Surprised

The last I read the average life expectancy for women in the US was 81 yrs old. Wouldn't that put middle aged at around 40.5? I have seen the definition defined at the ages of 40 to 60 yrs old though.

It's probably just a little older than the person thinking about it is Woman LOL

I would say it starts at about age 50.

50, but I could be swayed to go lower.

Depends how you define middle age.

Are you looking at a range:  i.e. 45 -64;  or the exact midpoint of the (average) life span.

People don't age in exact increments.  For example at 55 one would be certainly past the 1/2 point, but would be much more healthy and active (typically) than a person who is 85.

Do the math.

Middle age is an age I haven't been in a long time.

I started to consider myself middle aged when I turned 40.
