There was a major fire at an LA refinery, causing supplies to go down and prices to rise. Plus I think there has also been a strike at another refinery.

It's also the time of year when companies have to switch to spring/summer blends.

CA has a very specific blend, only used in that state - to keep down pollution. So with the refineries off line, prices had to rise.

The fire in Torrance CA was not the entire refinery. (An FCCU exploded.) They probably had to cut back by 20% (my guess), but it's a rather small refinery and wouldn't really have anything to do with the price of gas across the country.

There is a major strike going on now. It's affecting about 20% of the refineries in this country. The striking union United Steel Workers (USW) wants a new contract with demands of an annual 6% pay increases over the next three years and rather large sign on bonuses for it's paying members. They also want to be the only union working in the refineries. So it's not (all)about non-union workers I think this strike will last a few months.

The spring/summer blend starts April 15th.

And then there's good Ole OPEC.....

I got gas this afternoon. $3.05. A week ago it was $2.95. And the beat goes on... ETA: I got gas at a Shell right across the street from a refinery. Smiley Happy

Boy, that's something I never look at on a fill by fill basis. When it started to get up in the $3 range, I rounded up my budget to $4. That's a price point I'll stick with. I figure, if I need it, it need it no matter what the price.

That's what I hate about gasoline .... it doesn't go "on sale" a few times a year, and you can't really "stock up" when the price is low !! {#emotions_dlg.angry}
