Re: WEGMAN'S FOOD STORE COMING SOUTH

Let me dispel the Wegmans is more expensive myth right now.   It is NOT.

Numerous comparisons have been done to show this.  The last one I saw was done in the tri-state area ( NJ, DE, PA) comparing 100 items.   Wegmans was the second cheapest.

Now, if you purchase their imported items and there are so many great ones, that will run up your bill.   But if you stay away from those and other speciality items, you will find their prices cheaper.

The Wegmans store brand is excellent and a great value.

My only complaint is that they continue to add giant family packs and reduce smaller packs.  BUT,  I've lost count of the items I've taken to the counters and asked if I can have a smaller amount.  Meat, chicken, cheese even a head of cabbage (they asked how much of it I needed and cut that off for me).   And they do it with a smile on their face and say 'thank you for shopping at Wegmans'.

As someone who used to do customer service training, I can tell that first they are great at hiring and second they are great at training.   Both are essential for providing great customer service.

Re: WEGMAN'S FOOD STORE COMING SOUTH

I live in Northern VA and have a Wegmans about 15 minutes from me and that's where I love to shop.  Congratulations on getting a Wegmans!

There is one 5 minutes from my house, lovely store and very competitive pricing. I heard there is already one in Richmond, VA.

Re: WEGMAN'S FOOD STORE COMING SOUTH

I learned about the produce chopping from a friend.

I, too, rarely need a whole head of anything and they are happy to chop it in half for you.

Same with some of their specialty breads.  I fought for a very long time to get half loaves and they finally have them.

Re: WEGMAN'S FOOD STORE COMING SOUTH

I remember going to giant once after work and asking the meat department to grind me some veal for meatballs.  He would not because he had just cleaned the machine.  The meat department was open until 7 pm and it was about 5:15 pm when I asked.

My experience is that Wegmans "everyday low prices" are lower than other chains' regular prices.  However, other supermarkets have weekly sales - and sale circulars - while Wegmans does not.  Their sale-priced items are often less expensive than Wegmans' regular-priced items.  For example, Wegmans rarely if ever has BOGO deals..  So I shop sales at other supermarkets and only shop Wegmans when I need something that's not on sale elsewhere.

@ValuSkr When I used to get the local Sunday paper delivered, there was a Wegmans flyer every week with sales in it. Since I don't get the paper anymore, I'm not certain if there is a flyer, but they do have weekly sales...and I have gotten BOGO on some items. Sometimes the sales are not advertised and vary store to store, usually inventory they are trying to clear out, but I've gotten some great deals on stuff, mainly toiletries or seasonal stuff, at various Wegmans locations.

Wegmans also has a "Menu" magazine which I get in the mail, with recipes and coupons

The Wegmans near me has been open almost two years.  They have a sales circular rarely - once in two or three months, usually around a holiday.  They do put items on sale at times but how to find out about them if there's no circular?  That one escapes me!  They finally caught up to the rest of the market this year by offering digital coupons.  But, last time I looked, they're all on store-brand items (including prepared foods, meat, bakery, etc.).  And I've never seen a BOGO deal at Wegmans, nor Catalina coupons, nor instant savings when you buy four (for example), etc. -- the kind of incentives offered at other markets.  Being from Upstate NY, I used to be the biggest Wegmans cheerleader.  Now I rarely shop there.

How right you are!!  I much prefer to shop at Giant Food and get their sales and even their store brands are good.  I can get smaller packages of meat for two people and not for 10 people.   My Wegman's in Maryland you can not get small packages of meat and I've never had problems getting something made special for me at Giant in the over 20 years I have shopped there from the meat dept. whether they just cleaned their machines or not . Wegman's to me is a beautiful store inside and so is Giant, but I'm not there for the decor, I'm there to shope for food.  Food is food whether you put it in Wegman's or you put it in Giant.

Re: WEGMAN'S FOOD STORE COMING SOUTH

I am originally from western NY, suburb of Buffalo. I LOVE Wegman's. I am in Georgia now and we don't have great choices (in my opinion). There are so many products I miss. Wegman's had everything I wanted and more. i really hope we get one here.  Right now the best we have is Publix and they just don't cut it compared to Wegman's. Thanks for posting. I am going to keep my fingers crossed!

Re: WEGMAN'S FOOD STORE COMING SOUTH

With the exception of the first few years, I've shopped at ShopRite my entire married life.  When Wegmans came to our area, initially I was excited.  Sadly I've never been all that impressed.  It is my run to store when I need something in a hurry. (ShopRite is always crowded, Wegmans is not) Some prices are competitive but in general I find Wegmans is more expensive.

ShopRite changes prices weekly; Wegmans seem to be monthly.  Last week watermelon was $3.88 at ShopRite.  This week it is $6.99.  Since Memorial Day it's been $4.99 (or .98) at Wegmans.  Today I did a quick run to Wegmans.  I paid $3.99 (or .98) for celery.  Today was the first time I was aware Wegmans had digital coupons. No other checker has ever asked if I had them.

Re: WEGMAN'S FOOD STORE COMING SOUTH

We are getting one in the SE Virginia city that we live in too!  I am from Rochester, where the store originated.  My first high school job, in 1975, was at our local Wegmans as a cheese sampler at the Olde World Cheese Shop!
