Then I must say, with all due respect, that I find your belief extremely harsh.  What we are discussing is a lunch program for children.  If parents are irresponsible, stingy, thoughtless, lazy, stupid etc., I fail to comprehend why someone would want  take it out a child.

Let's get rid of the free lunch system, let the kids go hungry, have DSS step in to put the kids in an orphange, or foster care (where the foster family will receive government assistance), and the kid will lead a non-psychologically-messed-up-life, right? Thank you for being an example of how our education system is REALLY failing.

I imagine there are those who own a home, a car and some nice clothes can fall on hard times and need assistance of some sort. We can't judge on those things alone. In our county, there are so many poor families (because it's basically people who live off the water or service the tourist industry) that all students get free breakfast and lunch. I do understand the frustration of knowing there are those who take advantage, but in this case, I wouldn't get in a twist over feeding children. And yes, I know we are all paying for it.

What I'm trying to say putting a bandaid on the problem is not going to resolve the situation.  Parents should put their children first and foremost.  And the lazy, selfish, whatever ones, should be educated:  DSS d/n only remove children and throw them in an orphanage.  They strive to make families having problems overcome the situation.  And, I would never let a child, elderly person, whomever go without.  Intimating that someone is harsh or uneducated when disagreeing on something is IMHO rather harsh and uneducated.  First and foremost, I believe people should help people and not rely on the government - I'm not a socialist, I guess.  But I believe in helping, caring for others and resolving a situation not helping it to continue or even grow.

What exactly would you do?  If the state or federal application procedures do not require parents to submit proof of income to qualify for reduced or free lunches how is that fraud?  Perhaps I am missing something.

@eddyandme You cannot cherry pick which government programs are good and bad to defend your argument, then say that people shouldn't rely on the government.  I cannot understand your point of view, because you clearly cannot understand your own point of view.

I have enjoyed reading various opinions on this thread.

Unfortunately I agree with both sides of the opinions!

Everybody on both sides make valid points! Great to read them without name calling etc!

I dont mind my taxes dollars being used in this way.  At least, it is feeding kids, regardless of their parents, and that is not a bad thing in my book.  I have other larger issues of how my tax dollars are used.
