Using an umbrella in the hot Summer sun?

Was driving today and a young man (late teens/early twenties) was holding up an umbrella while walking to a nearby shopping center.  Bright, sunny day; not too hot.  It reminded me of myself, years ago, when I used to meet friends at a somewhat warm/hot area's walking trail.  I often used an umbrella for shade, because I wasn't used to hot weather.  (We ran across several others doing the same.)  Anyway, seeing this young man today prompted me to wonder if anyone here uses an umbrella while walking in hot weather.  Would be a good idea, if only during vacations in ultra warm areas, etc.

Isn't that technically a 'parasol?'

Re: Using an umbrella in the hot Summer sun?

I use umbrellas for sun. I throw a fold up umbrella in my bad whenever I think I might be in the sun for an hour or more. They provide an extra barrier of protection with my sunscreen and it's nice to keep the hot sun from shining directly on my neck. They're also much cooler than a hat, which makes me sweat.

I also have a paper parasol I take out if I know it's safe for something a little more fragile, like a less crowded space where I won't need to fold and unfold it and stick it in a bag.

Yes!  A Parasol........Actually, it's a wonder that more folks don't use parasols now-a-days.  To protect our/their skin, and keep us a bit cool in very hot weather.

Sometimes I use an umbrella on walks in the summer if it's really sunny and bright. It's so much easier on the eyes and I can skip wearing a hat so my head can breathe! I used to have a golden retriever and she didn't do well in the heat, so if I had to take her out on a hot day I'd hold the umbrella over her. I could tell it really made a difference for her.

Mosts true parasols won't work to keep rain off you. An umbrella works in the sun and the rain and a true parasol usually won't work in the rain.

I was telling (asking) my friend (in my car): Gee wouldn't it be a great new trend? !!  And she answered/said that maybe a small, lightweight, fold-up umbrella would be handy and easy to stash away while shopping indoors, etc.

I'm usually in my car.  If I'm walking I'm busy balancing myself and I usually have so much junk in my hands I don't have room to hold an umbrella.

I have not, but I think about it. I am very fair and have had a cancer on my face treated. I think I would feel a little silly because I don't see anyone else using one. Maybe I could start a new trend!

Yes. I will if it is a hot unbareable sunny day and I have a ways to walk.  Mostly to save my skin. I wear sunscreen but dislike sun beating on me.
