@gidgetgh.  1973 was the winter that Houston had now three times.  I wonder if it was the same storn Atlanta had?  One occasion was February 17th, my dh's 40th birthday.  I wrote a big "40" in the snow on the windshield of his truck and took a picture.

@Kachina624 - ours was in mid-January.

Re: Upcoming weather in the South

We had a bad one like that last year.  Stuck at home for days.  Prior to that was the year my daughter graduated from High School.  That was 1996.  She had dance thing in Atlanta that weekend and we were supposed to ride with someone who canceled on us.  DH got us the last flight out to ATL.  Even ATL closed down after we got there.  I had to catch us a ride home, but we were stuck in the hotel an extra day before roads opened up.  ATL to Birmingham was fine, but it took us 7 hours to get from BHM to Decatur AL, normally an approx. 1 1/2 hour drive.  We spent the night there then on to our final destination.

The people we rode home with live very near us, but the problem was getting up and down the hilly terrain to our homes.  She called her husband who was more than happy to get his 4 wheel drive out.  As we got to my house, every time he would try to turn into my driveway, the car would start sliding down the hill.  He eventually just went down the hill and then drove back up to get into the driveway.

While I'm not expecting anything like that this round since temps are getting above freezing, but DH & I have a class scheduled on Saturday and we really want to be able to go.

Re: Upcoming weather in the South

I have seen all types of WInter weather, and DH and I can usually manage most of it.

In the old days we used to put chains around our tires.

It is a real pain to be behind a big truck on a snowy road going uphill!

Once I was driving to Delaware on I-95 and a hail storm hit our area with a vengeance.

ALL 6-8 lanes of I-95 traffic came to a screeching halt for 15 minutes!!

A long time ago I bought those slip-on over shoes/boots ice traction cleats from QVC--they are a wonderful solution for ice storms!  Usually trains and subways can run even with bad weather--they then become my choice to use rather than driving.

Our city has never had a shutdown/power outage for more than a day--I believe that expertise has greatly improved since 1973!! (Although in our home we do have a working wood stove that we never use.).  I think people in the South are not used to the cold weather conditions as much as we are up North.

Re: Upcoming weather in the South

@gidgetgh We are now running at 3 to 5 inches expected north of metro. Should we lay bets on my getting absolutely nothing by the end of the week? Smiley LOL That would be about right with our weather people.

I hope you get nothing but what you can blow away. We'll gladly take it all up north.

@Laura14 - at this point, I'll grin and bear a light snow. But an ice storm?  No.  I went to Publix this morning. I'll have all my storm snacks eaten before it even gets here.

@gidgetgh

Whatever you get weather-wise, I hope you don't have to suffer. But, I promise that your power/electric / weather grid is a whole lot better than it was in 1973

Re: Upcoming weather in the South

People shouldn't laugh at the South's weather and how we learn to prep for it.  It can snow a couple inches then thaw and freeze and thaw and freeze and not much moving for days.

I think it was in 2011 we had a horrible ice storm in Oklahoma--no power in places for days and days.  I remember we couldn't sleep a couple nights for listening to limbs fall off trees and huge trees simply split and crash to the ground.  It was horrible. Everything was encased in a thick layer of ice with snow over that.

Re: Upcoming weather in the South

We are now under a winter storm watch. 3-4 inches of snow possible and.....and..... the dreaded ice.

I belong to a huge community Facebook group.  They are all posting about how excited they are.  I have kept quiet because I don't share the same opinion. Like at all.

I am older, live alone and haven't been in the greatest of health in the last several months and to be honest, the thought of not being able to get out if I need to and possibility losing power shakes me some.
