Make sure that everyone who is offended clears their drive of ice and snow, lays down ice melt, removes those 6 junk cars from the drive and keeps their dogs secure.

I live rural and you couldn't pay me enogh to be a carrier driving in that little tin can truck all day.

Yup in rural areas, such as mine, my USPS delivery person will drive all the way down my driveway to put a package on my back porch, he/she turns around and then can drive out. Otherwise my mailbox is at the street at the end of my driveway.

I live in a large city and the mail person parks on the street. Packages are delivered to my door and they usually knock to alert me.  In my area, USPS service is better than UPS.

Exactly.  And that little tin can doesn't have air conditioning in the 100 degree heat and they freeze their butts off in the winter for that "huge" salary.

My mailman stops by my mailbox, shuts the engine and brings the package and the mail to my front door. The house is not far from the road and is not in a busy area. He has never brought the truck into the driveway. Now, on the other hand, Amazon backs into the driveways around here.

Sounds like a safety measure.  I can understand their reasoning.  We have public service here all the time warning people to check behind their vehicles before backing out of their driveway.  Seems like two toddlers each year are run over the killed because they somehow got behind a vehicle and the driver couldn't see them.

Post Office doesn't want to be responsible for that situation.

Or a kid could lay down a bike or something and it could get run over.  Maybe an animal gets behind the vehicle and gets run over.

Accident happen whether you are on your own personal time or at work.  It's best to avoid putting people in that situation to begin with.

I agree about safety. I grew up in a house with a very steep driveway Visitors were terrified of it. Growing up there and learning how to drive there, it was easy for me and my family to get in and out of, but it was quite a task for visitors and my friends hated it. All delivery people and postal workers would park by the mailbox and walk packages up the driveway.

I think like every service, good and bad. My neighbor bragged about his $60,000 salary 20 years ago when degreed teachers made  $30,000. He was home at 2:30 pm. Nice hours.

The benefits/pay probably are not as good. The woman who retired two years ago was great and wrote us a note how she watched our kids grow up etc.  She asked if she could drive as said they weren't supposed to. The one now speeds, lays on the horn and drives by flagged boxes. She stuffs the box with packages to avoid a home delivery. Years ago we had to go to the P. O.for an item too large. I should be grateful.

Sad.... I take anything important like tax bills, govt. forms to the P. O. as can't trust my carrier. We had some kids steal mailboxes and when I called in the offense all they asked was how soon would I have  a new one up?

True story regarding our cluster mailbox:

We have 2 on my cul-de-sac. Each has 16 cubbies (one for each house). The box (silver) sits on a silver post. The back opens with a key for the post person and we use a key that opens just our assigned cubby.

The paint on these things has peeled almost completely off. They are covered in rust. One leans WAY over. It is against the law to paint, to repair to do ANYTHING to a USPS mailbox. We've called, complained, offered to paint them ourselves...NO DO NOT TOUCH. Ok then.

One day, someone wanted to get into the other cluster mailbox REALLY badly. So badly that they broke the lock of almost all of them AND knocked it to the ground (we think they tried to run over it with a car; not sure). Well, now it MUST be fixed. But wait...that takes time.

2 MONTHS LATER........

Neighbors have had to drive 45 minutes EACH WAY to get their mail. People are TICKED OFF.  One day I look out and there are 2 police cars, a USPS truck and an official looking vehicle (not marked) clustered around the mailbox. Took almost 8 hours but when they all pulled away....TA DA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  A new cluster mailbox. Apparently they had to have police present when dealing with the US Mail and US MAIL property when a civilian is working on it.

I mean....really? *shakes head in disgust and disbelief*

Nothing I hear about the USPS surprises me. Nothing.

@willdob3  That seems like a rather drastic solution to a non-problem

I think the USPS has stopped providing liability insurance for their drivers, which I think is crazy. The driver’s now have to pay for their own, and are rebelling by refusing to do anything they deem as “risky.”

I can’t describe how much I hate the USPS.  I complained about our lousy service and missing deliveries for years. Every time, I would get a nasty call from our local branch manager. Lo and behold, back in April, we got a stack of mail delivered that should have been delivered in December!  No call or explanation for that one!

"I've been here since October 2006. Wow!"
