Hi @MickD
It is beautiful there, peaceful. There's also an animal cemetery there for the pets of military members and families who served on that base. That goes back for quite some time.

@PurpleBunny......your one post jarred my memory. There is a cemetery just up the road, around the curve. It is quite large. There is a lot of land in the front that is not in use yet, but there are a few graves there. There was a time when I went by there almost every day, and there would be this one car parked near the entrance and you would see this elderly man sitting a lawn chair at his wife's grave. On extremely hot days he would be there in the early part of the day. But it was a daily visit to her grave. He would be there for quite a long time.
Now, I go by there every time I go to the hospital for a treatment......and haven't seen his car there for quite a while. Several folks have mentioned that too. No one knows how he is or if he is still living. Always thought what a loving and devoted man he was. Felt so sorry for him, but yet, he was doing what he wanted to do for the love of his life.

@ShowMe wrote:@Noel7.....thanks for the follow up on the cemeteries. Very interesting. After reading the list of cemeteries, am sure my sister has been to one of them. Will talk with her this evening and read these 2 posts to her. She will be interested in it too.

I'd be interested in her response @ShowMe I think pretty much everyone in the immediate Bay Area has been through Colma at one time or another. It's very homey and they don't mind jokes. There have been a couple of bars there with offbeat names having to do with the silent residents.

I totally can relate. I get used to seeing a LOT of regulars. When one suddenly disappears, I'm always concerned. I always hope that if they if they passed, they are happily reunited with their beloved one.

I'll let you know what she says.
That is funny about the bars.

@PurpleBunny wrote:@ShowMe I love memorial stones. Some of them are exquisite. When you think that the older ones were carved by hand, it's amazing.
That is what many of the stones in the German cemetery are...... They did it themselves. Very interesting. You know that was hard work to do that.

Talked with my sister a few minutes ago. She was very familiar with Colma...... She said she used to work with a relative (she was his boss) of Mayor Alioto (?).
She said she thought this was very interesting.
She also said that most of the graves are above ground because of the earth quakes......

@ShowMeAlioto was a really beloved mayor. He sure spoke his piece when he felt the need, lol. He was from an Italian-American family, some of whom still reside in this area.
I don't have the facts on above ground burial. It was fairly common years ago for the very wealthy to have a vault and stone memorial above ground. All of the many funerals I've been to in the several cemeteries there have been underground burial. That includes a Jewish cemetery, a Roman Catholic Filipino cemetery and a Protestant cemetery most recently.
If I can find that info, I'll let you know.
There are also mausoleums housing many urns with cremains. Each one has a glass window and is large enough for a photograph or two and small keepsakes. My lifelong friend was there until her family moved and took her cremains with them.
