Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

There are so many lies - and efforts to blame - as well as to absolutely exonerate those who clearly made decisions causing people to die (talking about putting Covid patients in nursing homes when we knew they were the most vulnerable population).

We were told it was just "another lie" that a vaccine could possibly be developed by the end of the year.  And yet, here we are.

Yes, apparently they are not producing it as fast as we'd like, but still.

I am also wondering about whether some of the vaccine we paid billions to help develop is being sent to other countries - because that was another mantra - that we were "selfish" to think we should get it first etc. etc. (although I note that some of the people who said that - were first in line to get vaccinated - but what else is new?)

@gidgetgh

I am a rural Georgia resident.

I called our health department and put on the list for an appointment time.

They called me back a little over a week later with an appointment date and time.

In less than two weeks from my initial call, my husband and I had an appointment time and had received our vaccinations.

From the time we got to the health department for our shot, until the time we left took 35 minutes, and that includes the 15 minute wait time after the shot.

I'm sorry you are having such difficulty in your county, but in general, most of Georgia is moving right along pretty efficiently. We are luckier than most.

Could you try a different county?

@Georgiagrama -actually, Georgia is ranked 49 out of 50 in terms of vaccine rollout.  Only Alabama lags behind us.  Not good.

I got mine last Thursday but it was online booking only through the County Health Dept. website which crashed the second they opened it up. I happened to try again, just by dumb luck, when they brought it back up 14 hours laters.  It crashed again this past Friday at 5 PM when they loaded next weeks appts in there.

You could not book them by phone.

I had tried 8-10 independent pharmacies prior to that, with no luck.  CVS is supposed to be a big player in this, but they have no information yet.

A friend of mine got her shot the day before I did at the same place.  She was told that for the second shot, she'd have to scrounge around to find the second dose.  When I went the next day they told me they changed the procedure overnight the night before and that they WILL contact us and give us a appt for the second shot.  She had no idea as to whether they'd contact us by phone or email....or when.  It's a little nerve wracking.

I feel very fortunate to have gotten the first dose.  I won't relax till the county (Cobb...huge county) figures out how to notify us for the second. It really shouldn't be this difficult,

'Fortunately,  Publix and Kroger started offering limited appts. As of a few days ago.  They automatically schedule your second appt when you book your first.  What an ingenious idea.

The metro Atlanta counties are really struggling with this.  Even the procedure isn't smooth.  And can I call my health dept and ask "so, just exactly how are you going to notify us for the second shot"?  Sure, I could try, but you can't get through on the phone.

Again, we rank 49 out of 50.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

@gidgetgh   I got an appointment with the Cherokee County health Dept. for 2/11 for the second dose. It is a different # for the 2nd. dose than the call center hotline # that was impossible to get through to schedule the first dose. I decided to schedule this rather than wait on the Cobb vaccination center. Although I must say Cobb certainly knows what they are doing. An article in the  AJC today said that Fulton County opened 2000 slots on Saturday for employees and their spouses 65 and older. That's impressive.

The vaccine is being rolled out everywhere. Contact your physician's office and see when they'll be getting their vaccines in. I know that it also goes by age and classification, so be patient and wait a short while.

@Effie54 -yeah, when I called my primary he said he wasn't participating so it was up to me to find the vaccine.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. In our area, there are sign-ups at hospitals for the vaccine (for the right age group). CVS and Walgreens will be vaccinating people very soon. No worries.

@50Mickey - do you have the phone number for Cherokee for the second vaccine?  Can you share it with me please?

Unfortunately, that's not true where I live (Long Island).

I received my vaccination card with a date that shows when I need my second dose.  Apparently someone will call me.  My friend went to the same place I did and she was told that she would have to go through the entire process of scheduling her second dose the same way she did her first one.  I pray that's not true since we need to have the second vaccine by a certain timeframe in order for it to be deemed effective.  I haven't met one person here who has had their second dose scheduled for them.

My four week mark is February 8th and I'm already getting nervous about availability.

I am in Michigan. If you cannot get through to schedule  the second dose we are told to just show up with out first dose card. This is through the Health Dept.

I wouldn't even know how to access the vaccine.  I don't have a doctor, so I figure at some point maybe it will be accessible at Walgreens, or another such venue (?).

@chickenbutt , I don't think physician's offices are getting the vaccines are they?

Our state board of health just released a list by county of every place that is administering the vaccine.  There is no mention of going to your physician. The places mentioned in my county are a drugstore, a grocery store that has a pharmacy in it, a county health agency and one hospital.  Perhaps when everyone else is eligible, physician's office will get it.

Right now, group 1B can go on our county board of health website and fill out a questionnaire which puts you on the list to get the vaccine.  The board of health will e-mail you or call you as to a date and time.  My boss received an e-mail yesterday but it's another sign-up.

I'm going to be in the everyone else phase whenever that happens.   I believe my DH will be in 1C because he has pre-existing conditions however, he's not interested in getting the vaccine.

I don't think that doctor's offices have the storage capability...to keep the vaccine cold. It might be a while before they are able to join in. Of course, if their office is in a hospital that might make a difference.

I don’t quite understand the sudden announcement for expanded access (all 65+) without the supply to support it. First states and counties scramble to expand access with insufficient money and resources. Now governors are not getting the expected supply next week. And people who weren’t sure about the vaccine are now angry because they can’t get it right away. 😡 In SoCal we still have some assisted living, nursing home, and first responders who haven’t gotten it yet. And now you’re opening up to the general public 65+?

I'm in SoCal also, @bikerbabe, and I've been wondering the same exact thing. This announced expansion was seriously ill-timed, especially given the news that the touted reserve was a fantasy.

All that this has done is to confuse everybody and wreak havoc on already overwhelmed health outlets that are dealing with all the calls and e-mails.

I can't blame LA County for not changing their protocal. They have not yet even reached all the health workers and essential workers.

Personally, even though my husband and I are over 65 but not over 75 and would like to get vaccinated as soon as possible, we are both healthy and following the rules scrupuously.

A friend's 95 year old mother who lives in a nursing home in Phoenix area still  has not gotten it. And they have a COVID outbreak in the facility.
