Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

I don’t quite understand the sudden announcement for expanded access (all 65+) without the supply to support it. First states and counties scramble to expand access with insufficient money and resources. Now governors are not getting the expected supply next week. And people who weren’t sure about the vaccine are now angry because they can’t get it right away. 😡 In SoCal we still have some assisted living, nursing home, and first responders who haven’t gotten it yet. And now you’re opening up to the general public 65+?

I'm in SoCal also, @bikerbabe, and I've been wondering the same exact thing. This announced expansion was seriously ill-timed, especially given the news that the touted reserve was a fantasy.

All that this has done is to confuse everybody and wreak havoc on already overwhelmed health outlets that are dealing with all the calls and e-mails.

I can't blame LA County for not changing their protocal. They have not yet even reached all the health workers and essential workers.

Personally, even though my husband and I are over 65 but not over 75 and would like to get vaccinated as soon as possible, we are both healthy and following the rules scrupuously.

I got my first vaccine on Jan 11....no side effects at all. I went through a link someone posted on Next Door. If you don't have that app I highly suggest it. The link was for Walgreens but not the .com site. I am due for my second dose (moderna is what I was given) on Feb 7. The tech said I would need go online and find the second dose just like I did the first one. Now all of the Walgreens within 100 miles of me are completely out. I am in group IB which is age 65 and older and age 16 and up who have serious health issues.DH still has not found an appt and i look everyday for him. I tried to get him an appt when I got mine but the other available times filled up before i could log out and set up an account of his own (required). Our country set up a huge hub but it is chaos. SIL took DH there today and they were turned away because they were 3 minutes too late. Four hour wait in lines....seeing very old people waiting in line pushing walkers is inexcusable. I guess i have been a lucky one...but now wonder what happens if I can't find my second dose.

Do you have a Primary Care Provider (a family doctor)?  Have you contacted him or his office for information?

Really I have only seen some states doing a great job at this.

My primary care provider knows no more than I do! They just say they haven't gotten information yet when the vaccine will be available to gourp 2 or whatever it is.

I have just decided I'm not going to look anxiously about where and when I can get it.

Ive "signed" up to be notified with the PC but not expecting anything anytime soon. Many counties don't know or have anymore vaccines available, despite news reports or "now available or giving to."

I suspect things will be better in a month or two, esp after jan 20 with some kind of fed roll out emergency plan at last!

Re: Trying to find the Covid vaccine

As to things "getting better" in a week or so, I wonder - because first of all, the new leader already said he thinks it's better to vaccinate everyone once as fast as possible and NOT hold any back for second shots  because then more people will have SOME immunity.

I'm not sure how that will work if it becomes the policy.  And I think that may be what our County is planning by now opening up to 65+ (while acknowledging at the same time they don't have enough vaccine yet for all those in the 75+ group) - as they are NOT scheduling second shots when people get the first one.  They are telling people to "check back" to try to schedule the second shot when it's due.

I also read that the second shot needs to be given in a short timeframe - like a week or so - after the due date or it won't provide the 95% immunity - so scheduling IS an issue.

So what happens if people don't get the second shot?  This may be why we are being told that even AFTER people are vaccinated, we still have to stay locked down and wear masks - and that really nothing will change.
