I would hope the parents did some research into what they want to name their child. Maybe they have and are seeing it from the native american history aspect. the horse is most likely named for the area of the Palouse River where the Nez Perce tribe was located. They took care in breeding their horses and what was refered to as A Palouse Horse eventually became " Appaloosa" It was Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce people who said, " I will fight no more forever." Peace.

@terrier3: Several years ago there was a short-lived soap opera called 'Capitol,' with a main character named Sloane. I always thought it was pretty; perhaps the person you mentioned heard it there.

The name came first. There was an actress named Mercedes McCambridge who was born in 1916.

The Mercedes car was founded in 1926.
