Threads about childrens' names always make me think of a friend of mine whose late sister was Frank Zappa's widow.   (For those who aren't familiar with Gail and Frank's childrens' names:  Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet, and Diva Muffin.)   I think I can understand the desire for children to have their own unique names...  but I also like so many of the more "traditional" names, too.   To each her/his own.Smiley

@dooBdoo  I've often tried but always failed to talk my friends and relatives into naming their child Dweezil.

I guess I have more of a "live and let live" attitude. I only offer an opinion on something like a baby name if asked.

I was only blessed with a son back in the 80's but my preference for a girl's name was Emily.  Love the classic names with a family name, such as the Mom's maiden name too.

Let me state for the record like Katy Perry and her pin last night at the Met I am "Not Becky" Smiley Wink

Remember Sloane Peterson from Ferris Bueller's Day Off?  Loved that movie.

Earlier today I had lunch with a friend who told me that her daughter is naming her first born daughter "Appaloosa."   I told her I thought it sounded like a disease that a chain of mountains gets.  Apparently it's a trendy new name, and she didn't want something traditional.  While I think it's rare that we hear children with names like Mildred, Bathsheba or Agatha anymore, I think there's something timeless about names like Ann, Elizabeth, Mary or Rose.  Did trend or tradition influence the naming of your kids?

I just think of all the nicknames to come. Like "you're a looooosa". Or she's "loose" - kids are creative. And mean.

I'm not so sure parents are thinking ahead to how the children will be affected by having really strange names.

I was almost a Heidi. Guess what my mom's favorite movie was?
