My son Matthew hates to be called Matt.
@RollTide2008 I have a nephew named Matthew. When he was young, his mother, my sister in law, corrected everyone who called him Matt. "HIs name is Matthew." Well now she calls him Matt.
My daughter in law's mother is named Sandra. But don't you dare call her Sandy. She will correct you repeatedly.
People are going to shorten names no matter what you do, so you better like both when naming your kid. I still call our oldest son by his full name, because I like it, but everyone else has shortened it.

I have a grand niece named "River." They wanted a "gender neutral" name. Whatever, ugh.

Just PLEASE whatever you do .....
DON'T name your kid RIchard if your last name is HEAD.

This is the generation of acronyms and emoticons.
They use u for you on texts and so on... it drives me crazy.
Soon everyone is going to be an initial or monogram. Easier to text. I already had a coworker call me L as his name for me.

@Sooner You nailed it!

Maybe we shouldn't judge people by their name.
I don't judge them, I judge their parents.
Names matter, food that has an unappealing name, often is passed over. They matter with new products, some have failed because of their name.
Companies employ people to name new products and paid focus groups are formed to evaluate the proposed name/names.

I sometimes wonder about the names parents give. I still can't believe Gwyneth Paltrow named her daughter Apple. Seriously ... a fruit?
@Tinkrbl44 I think the name Apple is a little odd....but to each his own.. I have 3 young granddaughters. They always got a kick out of Flo on the Progressive insurance commercials. For awhile they started calling the youngest girl Flo. No reason why...They just thought it was funny. Thankfully it finally wore off. 🤷🏻♀️

Something that I find curious, is that those with one syllable names like Jane are called Janey, while those whose names have two or more syllables like Timothy are called Tim.
