You mean to tell me you don't think servers deserve minimum wage, and you will punish them by withholding tips because they make minimum wage? How cheap, selfish, and entitled can you be?

This was a great response to cats01 ignorant reply IMO. Thanks @JJsMom !!

A couple of months back, a bunch of rich celebs (Reece Witherspoon was one) ranted about raising the minimum wage for servers.  The servers politely told them where they could stuff that idea as they make far more.  Most of the servers I know make $20-$30 an hour, and that's for casual dining.  The best part is that they do this part time!

If I can’t afford the tip, I dont go to that restaurant. I had always thought 15% was for good service and 20% was for outstanding service. I can remember one time getting such poor service that I left little. It was not a case of people being overworked or staffing issue. People standing around was evident. I appreciate being able to determine amount. Wait staff does deserve their tips if this is a tipping place.

So the restaurant business is objecting to a wage hike and regulatory standards by saying that it will hurt consumers.

I seem to recall hearing that whine before from the Chamber of Commerce types -- over and over and over.

That sounds like something a person who terrorizes servers would say.

Only cheap, ignorant people would stop tipping and they probably don't tip or under tip now.

One of the purposes of raising the wage for servers is to be able to eliminate tipping in the US when eating out. Remember, you don't tip servers in the majority of countries (at least, no country where I've gone out to eat). That's the basis of the argument for those against it; they'll lose income (if they're making nice tips now, that is).

I tip and tip well for excellent service. If I go somewhere and I'm told that tipping is no longer in allowed/wanted/not necessary at XYZ eatery due to the new law, I'm not going to tip. Why pass a law if people are going to ignore it and do what they want? If that's the case, keep it the way it is.

I'm pretty sure a law like this will put mom and pop restaurants out of business.  They'll never be able to afford min. wage.  I know the year they made you start claiming tips was a big hit on a lot of waiters.

I almost always tip 20%  even for bad service sometimes. I waited tables for a lot of years and I figure they may be having a bad day.   It annoys my husband, but I tell him that I'm giving them something to aspire to.
