On this day, June 23, 1961, the Antarctic Treaty finally went into effect.  It was an agreement that would regulate how nations would interact with the continent.

The treaty had been signed by the U.S. and almost a dozen other nations, all with concerns in the region.  It sought to ensure the absence of nuclear proliferation or activity by any nation on the continent, and to allow it to continue as a crucible for scientific research.

All things "Antarctic" being fascinating to me, I love its history and lore.  Saw too many retro movies with remote polar research stations, manned by quirky scientists and furnished with ludicrous stone fireplaces, lush libraries, oriental rugs and all the comforts of home, ha.

The flag that they show in the link below-- I wonder if it is the official Antarctica flag.  It is pretty colors, with just the shape of the continent on it.

Re: "ICY" AGREEMENT, JUNE 23

Thank you for this, @Oznell

May the treaty last forever.

I did find this article on the flag.  Apparently the one with the shape of the continent is the official one:  https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/does-antarctica-have-its-own-flag.html
