Thanks for all the good feedback. I am going to show my appreciation to the assistant but I'm not sure how, but not money. Thanks.

I think that these type of workers are very well paid and not needing a tip. Esp. the contractor himself. I would say - make him a pot of coffee and maybe some cookies or doughnuts for his break every day day and maybe if you are very happy with the job and feel he really went beyond normal you could tip the worker but not the boss.

I do believe that the tipping thing is way out of control in this country.

There's a lot of lawsuits now. I would opt out of serving food/drink. If they get sick or pretend to be, you will have to defend yourself.

Tipping is out of control in this country.

I so totally agree with that last sentence!{#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

Please don't - the tipping culture in the US has gotten out of hand already without having one more person that I am paying to do a job expecting a tip for .... doing their job.

Signed: the wife of a contractor

Exactly. It has.

I believe there are just some things in life that are super simple.

You do the work.
I pay.
Everyone's happy.

Unless you're going to be using them repeatedly, why tip?

Exactly!!!!

I would never tip the contractor...I assume he sets his prices at a level that is acceptable for him.

When I had a total kitchen remodel, I did buy lunch a few times for the crew - pizza, subs, stuff like that. Most of MY food was takeout then too!

I always tell them to help themselves to the Keurig and have cold drinks too.

I often tip. It may just be $10 cash to the fellow that hauls our junk away so that he can grab lunch. I tipped the two guys that installed our bedroom carpet. They were young and so appreciative ~ plus did a splendid job. I added a couple hundred bucks for our new roof contractors and some large equipment work that was done on some property we own. Had a new door installed and tipped. I don't have a guideline, just do what feels right at the time. I also tip well at restaurants. My dh and I have a comfortable living and many do not, so it makes me happy to "share".

No, I've never tipped a contractor. A 20,000 job tipped at 10% would be 2000, @20%- 4000. I don't have that kind of money.

Tipping is not always a percentage.

and i think that that is what it is all about......if you want to and can, then feel free to tip whoever you want whatever you want, especially those who are not normally tipped. i generally lean towards tipping people also.

i am not sure i understand why some people get upset if OTHERS want to tip...... and vice versa.

I've tipped furniture delivery guys and provided snacks and drinks for people doing work like painting or installing flooring, things like that. It's always appreciated.

If you want to tip, tip. If you don't want to, then don't. It's discretionary.

I don't think anyone is upset if others want to tip...or not. The "upset" is with the idea that it's become expected.
