Personally I do not think it is appropriate to tip a contractor. If they are union, the other workers are making union wages...... And undoubtedly, they are being paid very well. He is a contractor and you can bet he has figured in everything and then some in what the work is costing you into the contract you have with him.
If you are happy with their work upon completion, I do agree with what one other poster said about a letter, and too you might offer to give recommendations for him to his future customers.

I think that these type of workers are very well paid and not needing a tip. Esp. the contractor himself. I would say - make him a pot of coffee and maybe some cookies or doughnuts for his break every day day and maybe if you are very happy with the job and feel he really went beyond normal you could tip the worker but not the boss.
I do believe that the tipping thing is way out of control in this country.

There's a lot of lawsuits now. I would opt out of serving food/drink. If they get sick or pretend to be, you will have to defend yourself.
Tipping is out of control in this country.

The only tip I would give would be a good review on any number of websites that track that sort of thing. That should help generate more business, which I'm sure they're looking for.

Any contractors that we have hired have a 10-15% fee added on for "incidentals".
No incidentals, you still pay. That's their tip.

For all of the work he's doing, the contractor is being well paid, enough.
A letter of thanks and appreciation on his web page and facebook are enough.

Man, I'd love to do a $5,000 remodel but a $500,000 one ! Wow, I'll bet it's spectacular !

This strikes me as a fee for service thing and I personally wouldn't tip the contractor. At the completion of the job I might or might not tip the worker, but that's an assessment I'd have to make based on several factors and chances are I wouldn't.
