No you do not tip construction workers.

People still don't know why one tips someone who does a job or service.

Instead of a contractor with an assistant let's make it a furniture store owner with an employee. The owner is making a delivery with his employee...for whatever reason. He delivers to make sure the customer is happy, his other delivery employee is out sick...whatever.

I KNOW people here tip guys who deliver furniture. I wonder if they would also tip in this case...if they knew, because they dealt with him at the time of purchase, would they tip the owner? the employee? neither or both?

Re: contractors...I would tip them, as I would anyone, who gave service above and beyond what was expected. If they did extra work, finished ahead of schedule, cleaned up behind themselves daily, left the site as good or better than they found it. Yes, I'd tip them. Unless those things were stated in the contract. Why not?

How much they are paid should have nothing to do with whether or not they deserve a tip.

ITA. Writing a short note to the company about the quality of their work, the skill, timeliness, etc., etc., etc., would be very much appreciated by them. If they are on Angie's List or have a website where Testimonials are left, be sure to go there and give them a glowing recommendation...they will LOVE it!!

I also like sunshine45's suggestion of making some light snacks, bottled water or a place for them to store their lunch/drinks available to them. That is very considerate!

Please don't - the tipping culture in the US has gotten out of hand already without having one more person that I am paying to do a job expecting a tip for .... doing their job.

No, I've never tipped a contractor. A 20,000 job tipped at 10% would be 2000, @20%- 4000. I don't have that kind of money.

No, I don't tip the contractor. He gets paid the big bucks and is not on the scene most of the time.

But I do tip the workers.

If you're not happy with the amount they're charging you, sure go ahead and give 'em some more. Personally, I figure they're making good money and not everyone in this society should expect a tip.

We had a year's worth of remodeling at a cost of 500,000+----there were many many subcontractors involved as well as the general contractor---- we didn't tip anyone---as a matter of fact, their work won an award for them

It would be ridiculous to tip a contractor. Unless, you have plenty of money at disposal.
