Those pens that detect counterfeit money????

I know a guy that works at McDonalds in our small town. He said they got 2 counterfeit bills in McDonalds last week in the same afternoon.  I didn't think to ask him what they did.

Have you ever seen a store detect one?  Do they call the law?  Refuse the bill?  What?  I wished I would have asked him.

I decided to get one of those pens for my store even though I've never gotten a fake.  Do you tell them to hold on while I call the law?  LOL  Besides, they might not know it is fake!  Would they get in trouble?

I googled it and it said you are to detain them.  I have no way of calling the police while detaining them without them knowing.

Any experience?

Re: Those pens that detect counterfeit money????

I was told at a store my $20 bill was counterfeit.  I knew the clerk and she saw me take the bill out of a bank envelope.  Coincidentally, I'd just cashed a check at the nearby bank.  She did not detain me and I returned to the bank and went back to the same teller.  She checked that bill and the other $20's in the envelope.  She said none came up counterfeit.  Just the same she replaced the entire envelope of money.

Re: Those pens that detect counterfeit money????

Years ago I received 4 $100 bills from my BANK!! The only way it was discovered is because I went across the street to my daughters bank to deposit the money in her account. Teller spotted them right away. When she told me I was shocked I explained where they came from - like she might have believed me - she kept them! I went back to the original bank (I had banked here for years and knew the tellers and manager). When I explained my dilemma all I could do at that point was laugh! They explained normally I would be SOL but since she knew I was her last customer she refunded the money, she also went to the other bank and verified they were fake. I was lucky that day as I didn't lose out. They used to offer bank personnel a course on this but don't know if they do anymore. They also told me smaller bills are most often counterfeited $10's, $20's.

Re: Those pens that detect counterfeit money????

A few years ago I went on a field trip to a Federal Bank in New Orleans. Federal banks  are the small banks bank. The small banks deposit their money into the  Federal bank. They monitor the money and chase down counterfeit bills and find out where they came from. anyway it was really interesting field trip and I felt very safe about how they monitor the paper money to keep it from being counterfeit. 😊
