Oh my goodness !!!   Well I've heard everything !  At 73 I didn't know something like that was possible !  I also found out recently that my grandson's school ( he's going into the 3rd grade next school session starting in August)  will no longer teach cursive writing ! How are these young people going to sign their name to important documents as they become adults ? Buying a home etc ? Will printing out their name vs writing be exceptable ?

@Goodie2shoes this is a big misconception on these boards. Your signature does not have to be in cursive. You can "sign" all of the documents you mentioned in print if that is your signature.

 @DJs mom.  @Goodie2shoes.  It's even legal to sign a document with a "X", if that's  your sign.

During the lockdown and pandemic I was involved in many, many significant legal issues solely on line just requiring that I agree and attest!

No cursive signature required then or in 2024!

Many things in life are not taught.  They really learned through experience or by seeing what others do.

I would think everyone has seen a fully addressed envelope....hundreds of them.  This is not a skill that needs a teacher, like driving a car or reading or math.

It's amazing how these youngsters can figure out how to use electronics ...cell phone, computers, iPads, etc, but have no clue how to do every day tasks that they have observed for years.

I would be embarassed if my children/grandkids were so clueless.

There are many things in life that are very simple that many people do not know how to do (including yourself).  Till it is something you need or want to learn, you are happily oblivious to them.  These two were managers.  They could have easily delegated that task to someone.  They took it upon themselves to find out how it is done properly.  That it a good thing, not some thing they should be embarrassed about.

No way.  There are no simple things in life that I can't do or can't figure out or look up on Google.  I can even figure out complicated things by doing some research.

In today's world it is simple to look up information.  If you have even average intelligence, you should be able to do it.  Those who don't are just lazy.

Re: This is why you're charged for paper statements...

@Kachina624 this is true. As I have said previously on this board, I am a paralegal and work in criminal defense. You do not have to sign your signature in cursive for it to be valid. I took my then 14 year old son to the DMV last year to get his state ID for a summer job. He went to Catholic school so he was taught cursive although he doesn't always sign his name in cursive. The clerk was trying to teach him how to sign his name in cursive, she even went as far as trying to have him put his hand over hers and trace his signature in cursive that she wrote on a piece of paper. He politely told her he knows how to read and write in cursive, but he doesn't sign his name in cursive. She then told him if he didn't he wouldn't get his ID. I then approached her desk and put a stop to her misinformation. After telling her there is no law that requires a signature be in cursive, she then proceeded to let him sign his name the way he does and he was issued his ID.

@Kachina624

Wondered where the term "life skills" came from. Had never heard of it until this thread, but you've just given me the answer (apparently the term was originally for Welfare receipents).

@Laura14 has shocked us about addressing an envelope. So glad they asked you how.

Shocking? YES! Probably even more painful for them. The lack of knowledge stymies many in their ability to ask questions. How do they know what (and how to ask) if they don't know? How do they know what to be curious about? How do they know there is so much more to explore and learn?

At 76, I'm still taking classes at UNL and learning, growing and enjoying life. Enjoy reading, knitting, gardening & landscaping, and volunteering in civic groups & library where I'm able to share interests/ideas with others.

@1Snickers

I've taken that clock test, but used numberals. This year I'll remember to use ROMAN NUMERALS to see if the Med. Tech. (or whatever his/her title is) knows how to read it correctly!  Smiley Wink

More later. Think my appt. is in late June. Stay tuned!

@BirkiLady.  I've heard of Life Skills classes being offered in venues other than welfare offices.

I worked with a someone who was 24 and she had no clue how to write a check.  I had to  show her.  I had read that the schools stopped teaching the every day things such as writing checks and how to keep track of your checkbook, telling time.  I get a kick of how people on medicare have to take tests but they don't test the younger generation.

I had do this test a few years ago.  Swear my PCP is younger than my kids, but he did his best and told me I was 100% correct for each and every answer.

But when we went over my choices, I (me!) noticed that one was actually wrong.  We had a good laugh.  So who is sane now?

This is the truth!  No idea why the myth persists.

My family was in a foreign county for many of my school years and somehow cursive flew by me.

For 74 years I have only been able to print.  Never had any problem.  Passport?  Driver's License?  Title to house?  Will and Trust?  Banking?  Scribble on the pad at checkout?  All good.
