Many things in life are not taught. They really learned through experience or by seeing what others do.
I would think everyone has seen a fully addressed envelope....hundreds of them. This is not a skill that needs a teacher, like driving a car or reading or math.
It's amazing how these youngsters can figure out how to use electronics ...cell phone, computers, iPads, etc, but have no clue how to do every day tasks that they have observed for years.
I would be embarassed if my children/grandkids were so clueless.
There are many things in life that are very simple that many people do not know how to do (including yourself). Till it is something you need or want to learn, you are happily oblivious to them. These two were managers. They could have easily delegated that task to someone. They took it upon themselves to find out how it is done properly. That it a good thing, not some thing they should be embarrassed about.
No way. There are no simple things in life that I can't do or can't figure out or look up on Google. I can even figure out complicated things by doing some research.
In today's world it is simple to look up information. If you have even average intelligence, you should be able to do it. Those who don't are just lazy.
So because they choose to ask a real person for help learning something rather than hiding behind the internet they should be looked down upon. I would have no problem helping someone when asked. Would never think of telling them to Google it. Guess that is the difference between us.

@RedTop wrote:Oh, I believe it! My husbands niece came to visit recently; early 20's. I have a large clock with hour, minute, and second hands, on the living room wall and she cannot tell time that way, never had a watch; she had to look at her cell phone. She does not know how to write a check. The only phone she knows how to use is a cell phone. Days before she was here was the first time she'd ever seen a mercury thermometer.
@RedTop that's ridiculous. My 8 year old granddaughter can read a regular clock and she can even write in cursive. In fact, schools are teaching cursive.

I'm from the generation that used manual typewriters and mimeograph machines, so computers were a mystery to me. I can still only minimally use them.Just enough to get by with what I want to do. Still mostly a mystery.
Your comment reminded me of my mother's manual typewriter.
Then she got an electric typewriter! Whoo-hoo!
In one of my first jobs the hot new thing was a Word Processor.
Then, the computer.
The younger ones learn everything these days. I think many of the Boomer-era learned just whatever we had to learn to do what we wanted to do.
There's a lot of basic "knowledge gaps" for many, which is why they can't always connect the dots. We don't know what it is we don't know.
JMO, of course.

Well the way you have talked about these two gentlemen would indicate that you are not very approachable. Or would talk about them behind their backs.

I had read that the schools stopped teaching the every day things such as writing checks and how to keep track of your checkbook, telling time. I get a kick of how people on medicare have to take tests but they don't test the younger generation.
@Pecky My family from Australia were visiting last summer and saw me sit down to write a check to pay a bill. They were shocked. They couldn't believe I still use checks. They said they haven't used checks in years. They pay bills by transferring money on line or some such thing. They said they pay for everything by credit card,
and never use cash. This may not be exactly how they do things over there, except for the never use cash or check things.

Story is hard for me to believe.
Phones are in hand or very close at hand at all times.
Google is probably one of the most used options on the phone.
Why wouldn't they use it? First.
If you key into Google 'how to a' --- that's it, just that, you'll immediately see 'how to address an envelope' come up. Go ahead -- try it.
Two managers need to stumble and fumble and mumble over this? Neither of them thought to Google?
And I bet they walk aimlessly around the streets looking for a Starbucks. No, they don't. They know Google.
I think they were just killing time....lol
