I got a letter from the IRS stating the tax laws for unemployment were figured incorrectly when we filed our taxes.  I was on unemployment for a few months.  I do not think it is a scam as the refund was also deposited to my account.

@Mmsfoxxie, if you call your Bank they will be able to tell you where it came from. I'm waiting to hear the good news.

I do think you might want to call the IRS though. If it's an unemployment refund and no one on your return got unemployment, that might be a sign that someone else used your info to run a scam to get unemployment benefits under your name. Better safe than sorry. And if IRS says all is good, you can relax and enjoy the unexpected windfall.

Foxxie my son got $1800 but he received a letter first

@Sage04 , it labeled that it's from the IRS, ref 310.  I wish the scammers hadn't chosen my account, lol.  I was just reading my account number could have been gotten from a tax preparer.  That could be true although I've done my taxes myself these last two times due to Covid.

@Jessa9 .....now that's the way it's done if it's legal.  I know that the IRS doesn't call you or send emails but they DO send letters.

@Porcelain, trust me....I don't get windfalls, lol.  I'm going to call.  Definitely won't be spending it.

@Mmsfoxxie, I hope it's really yours.  I read about the couple who went on a spending spree with money that was deposited in their account ($120,000) by mistake.

Once $1,800 was deposited in my account by mistake. Notified the Bank three times and it took them about a week to find the correct account.

@Jinlei , but I haven't been unemployed.  I've been retired six years.  I'm sure yours is legit.  And you got a letter.

There's no reason to wait until next week to call the IRS.

If you call today, then you'll know for certain if it's legit or not.

No reason to keep yourself wondering.
