As usual, I checked all of my accounts this morning and I got a shock. An IRS deposit of $2100 and change was sitting in my savings account labeled refund (code 310). I haven't gotten a refund since I retired in 2015, lol. And I paid the amount I owed in April.
I'll wait a couple of days and see if the scammers send me a bogus email or bogus phone call telling me there was an error and where to send the money. Then, I'll call the REAL IRS.

If it's scam, then I have to wonder just how they got into your account. I would change my password asap.
Maybe it is some funds from the IRS from the Covid relief payments that you should have gotten earlier.

@Mmsfoxxie We just got a refund, too-$2006. Our accountant said it might have to do with unemployment and we should be getting a letter of explanation soon.

I was about to say it might not be a scam. Hope not. One question, does IRS make deposits to Savings Accounts? Maybe they do. You can also check with your Bank. They would know if it's from the real IRS.

@Lisa Y , was it coded 310? Yes, I'd think the letter would come first, though.
@haddon9 , I don't think they hacked my account. Wouldn't they have removed funds rather than putting funds in? Maybe the IRS was hacked. But since you've put it on my mind, I might change my password.

@Mmsfoxxie I also received a check..paper check from the IRS on. Tuesday. I was surprised because I had no idea what it was for but, a letter came today and it read: because of recent tax laws, rulings or regulations required us to to correct your unemployment compensation.
So possibly that is why you got a refund as well. They have our account information so I do not know why they sent a paper check.

Why not just call the IRS now?
Then you'll no longer be wondering.
Just cut the suspense and just call them.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) put out an update last week that breaks down the mysterious reference codes for three types of payments. These are the codes that appear in your bank account along with the funds. Each code starts with “IRS TREAS 310,” but then the code descriptions differ depending on the payment type. They are as follows:

@Mom2Dogs , I'm retired for the last six years so that wouldn't be why I got. There's no ethical reason that I can think of.
@Anonymous032819 , I am going to call the IRS next week. I'm just to see if I get a bogus call or email. But I'm going to call because the IRS will probably add interest to that money for me to pay back.

Yes, that's right @Porcelain ....310 tax ref. Tax refund is foreign to me, lol.
