Re: They Know I'm Old When I Say My Name

PhilaLady, One of my best friends in grade school , a really nice child, was named Cheryl.  Names go in and out of fashion, but it was a popular name in my school.

Other names popular where I lived were Linda, Bobby, Eddie, Donna, Kathy, and Brian.

As I grew up in a multi-cultural factory town, there were also many ethnic names that were very cool.

Re: They Know I'm Old When I Say My Name

I don't think you can always tell someone is old because of their name. Many younger folks today were named after beloved family members, friends, or someone else parents admired. It's a way to carry memories and history.

I worked with many younger staff with very old style, traditional names. I worked with a couple of young ladies named Cheryl, so it's not an old person identifier.

My names are uncommon and I always kinda liked that. I've never known anyone with my middle name, which I've always loved for being different. It's an Irish name. It means someone who cuts sheeps wool. Yeah, I've done a lot of that in my life ... LOL.

Re: They Know I'm Old When I Say My Name

I was the only girl I knew when growing up that had my name.

I met old ladies when I was a kid with my name and I hated it....I had an old lady name.

Now, I hear it on occasion, but not often.  I go by Carmie, but my name is Carmela.

People can't guess my age, but they can almost always guess my heritage.

I guess there's no harm with me telling you my name.  Cheryl

I thought you were going to say something like Tilly, Gertrude or Sadie. Cheryl is not an old name

@I am still oxox  - I'm thinking the same way you are.  I thought she was going to say her name was something like Gertrude, Hilda, Bertha, etc.

Cheryl and Diane are not older sounding names to me.

[ Edited ]

I was born in 1948. I was named after my paternal grandmother. Both names normal and still used today.

BUT my mom's mother, my grandma, threw a fit because I wasn't named after her: Nettie! I can't imagine being saddled with that name in 1948.

Re: They Know I'm Old When I Say My Name

@SouthernBee, Hi Pam!  It's Pam.  I think my full name is quite formal sounding, which is not me.  Pam suits me, I think.

Don't worry about any name dating you, girls.  Your age is available to anyone with a computer!     No secrets!  So accept your age, do not try to hide it.  Be proud of who you are!

I am proud to be 80.  There are some people, likely needing glasses, who think I look younger.  At the end of the day, who cares?  I am young at heart and you know, I want to keep on

learning.  Life throws everyone curve balls, but I am so grateful for so many things.  Gratitude and trust in God.

Re: They Know I'm Old When I Say My Name

I only knew one person with my name when I was in school ( born in 1952).
But it is definetly more popular now.

However, my name is not the common spelling and is usually spelled wrong. I always correct and say mine is obviously the correct way....

aim   ee.      Aimee,  not Amy!

I have several Carmelas in my immediate family @Carmie.  All of them are called Mela for short.  I love your nickname!
