But does the backlight keep you awake at night? I know this has been an issue with backlit devices like tablets - making it harder to fall asleep. I would like one but worry about this.

Supposedly, ANY light can make it harder to fall asleep. So, if one has that type of an issue with sleep, it wouldn't matter if you're reading with a lamp on or if the reader has a backlight. I don't have any problems falling asleep after reading for a bit.

true -- and the Paperwhite is front lit -- not sure the big diff with that and back lit -- off to Google now...

I had thought the Paperwhite was side lit but I don't have one so you would certainly know more than I do. I just keep reading how these screens (the lights) do something that can cause problems with sleeping. I have insomnia so am afraid to use anything that may make it any worse. Yet when I can't sleep I love to read and would love a Paperwhite!

Re: The New Paperwhite Kindle Reader -- is it brighter, clearer than the old Kindle Keyboard?

I've had two Nook tablets and then in October I got a Kindle Paperwhite and I absolutely love the thing. It's just the right size and weight. I can adjust the brightness of the page plus all the other options - size of font, etc. The Paperwhite is terrific.
