Usually people do NOT worry about puncuation... I text with many people. I use voice-to-text activation on my phone for the most part ..and if you say period...new sentence..paragragh..capital it will do it.

That said - nobody else does..they use slang. I get it...and understand it..but don't use it in return..

prolly, UR, ty, yw..stuff like that.. lol

Back in the 90's I was a chat room host on AOL. My mom and dad came to visit during one of my scheduled hours of moderating a needlepoint chat. They sat there amazed that I was communicating with needleworkers from across the entire country, all of whom were strangers. My dad was fascinated. My mom, not so much. She kept asking me why I'd want to talk to strangers about needlepoint. She never did understand my curiosity with computers and technology.

As others have indicated on this thread....if you want to stay in communication with teenagers you will have to learn texting. They absolutely detest making phone calls.

Lol. To your poimt about times changing with technology and older generation not understanding it....I work for a company where we all work from home. One of the gentelman I work with is in his late 40s. He was telling his dad that he works from home, but his dad doesn't understand the concept. He asked...how do you account for the work you do, do you have to fax your work in to your manager or something. Lol

I was just thinking about this a little while ago. And I realized just how far behind the times I truly am. I don't have friends or family who text (my son does on occasion but not to me), so it really doesn't matter to me. But I also don't tweet, I have a Facebook page but don't really use it, I don't have any idea what Tumblr is, and I don't pin things to a wall! I have a 5-year old flip phone (Tracfone) which serves my purpose for it. I do have a camera and load pictures to my computer. (yea for me! ) I spent a good deal of my work life in charge of large computer systems, so I do use a computer (another yea for me!)

I'm perfectly capable of learning all this new technology if the need arises, or if I just suddenly have a change of heart and want to do it, but I have so many other things to do with my time that I just don't bother. If it ever starts to affect my life, I'll get more up-to-date, but for now, I'm happy just being old-fashioned me!

Well, I've got my life back. The punctuation option was NOT as shown on the diagram in the manual. Go figure.

I use proper punctuation and spelling in my texts. I've been known to send a follow-up text apologizing for an inappropriate apostrophe that auto-correct threw in at the last second when I hit the send button too quickly.

I always try to remember to proofread my texts now after I once saw that when I described something as being ginormous, it was auto corrected and made it sound like I was calling someone an ignoramous.

I finally got an i-phone, and although I am not happy with the way it holds a charge, I LOVE that I can talk my text. So much easier than typing! Haven't figured out punctuation yet.

I believe punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc. is still necessary for emails.

However, although I spell out complete words in a text, I will often leave out commas, apostrophes, etc., because they require using extra keystrokes. I will put them in if eliminating them would confuse the message, however.
