so to answer your question, no, punctuation in texts in not that important to me.
ITA with you! i use it exactly like you stated. this is just another silly "problem" for people to complain about. nobody is trying to write the next great american novel!
just like chrystaltree said "The whole point of texting is to communicate quickly and efficiently with as few words as possible."

I know some of them, but there are others I see from time to time that I don't have a clue what they mean and have to try and google them if I really want to know. It's a whole new language, and I don't even want to learn it. I'm a firm believer in proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. and I'm just too darned old to change now!

Can I sit by you?
Seriously - everything you said.
For me, it doesn't really feel like an 'old' thing (although, don't get me started!) but I guess some of it is a manifestation of how I grew up. If I said anything out of line, such as poor grammar or misuse of words, etc, I got the snot knocked out of me. To this day I only feel right speaking with proper grammar, spelling things correctly (especially peoples' names! That's a pet peeve for me), and having good manners. Consequently, stuff like this makes me cringe.
Come on over, chickenbutt, I could use some reinforcement!
I was a stickler in school about this and had intentions of becoming a high school English teacher. Unfortunately, that didn't work out, but I still think the same way. I also cringe when I see an advertisement, on TV or in a magazine, etc., with a word spelled wrong! They are supposed to have proofreaders, I would think.
I know people here don't worry about it, and I don't either because people are typing fast, etc., and it doesn't really matter on the boards. But when it's out there for millions to see, even with the news scrolls on the bottom of the TV screen, all kinds of places I see this, and I think it's a problem. Are we teaching our kids that proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation don't matter? And, if so, what else are we teaching them, or NOT teaching them? (See, I just had to use those commas around "if so"!)

Thanks, Kittymom!
I guess it's a good thing I don't text. But I'd have to say that if I did - I would still be using proper grammar and punctuation. hehe
From what I hear, they don't teach stuff like grammar and spelling, etc, anymore. I think it's a shame but I guess people have to get used to a new world where manners and grammar don't matter anymore. Glad I'm on my way out!
I've also seen graphics on tv that were either grammar-incorrect, or misspelled words and boy do I cringe when I see that. I mean, come on! It's your job. Try to look like you made it past fourth grade. Ok, end of rant. ![]()

I'm old school, so I always use punctuation. However, as far as I know, you won't be fined for not using it.

All grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules are off when texting. Your not writing an official letter or dissertation, your texting quick messages.
Text however you want, but don't judge others or hold them accountable. Texting is used as quick form of communication, mostly typed with your thumbs, not meant to put a lot of effort into the form of message. Cant appreciate the free flow rules - don't text.

I don't think anyone here has judged or held anyone accountable for not using punctuation, etc. in texting. In fact, several of us have expressly said we don't care about it in that form of communication, or even that much on the boards... we just don't like using texting ourselves, and it may have something to do with how we feel about correct grammar, punctuation, etc. Or it may just be because we're "old" and have no desire to change now.
