You can't stop progress. Consumers our age have about 10-20 years left to drive. The car companies don't care what we think. They are catering to the new generation who are buying electric and living and thinking green. Complaining about the inevitable isn't going to stop progress. It's all about money and the demographic buying your product. And we aint it.
Many of us won't be around to see it, but the transition is in progress.
@JamandBread First, this isn't progress unless you see all the negative impacts as such.
Second, it's not the new generation that the car companies are catering to. There's a group dictating policy to companies and world leaders.
Third, you are right about a transition happening. Very unnecessary and quite unfortunate. (people need to look at the bigger picture here)
Issues in Germany have been mentioned but are people aware of what has gone on in Sri Lanka and why? (hint: they started down the transition path around 10 years ago more or less, they now have major shortages and the prime minister just declared the country bankrupt. The people are justifiably not happy and the president flew the coop. If people haven't heard about this, a) there's a reason and b) you need better news sources especially before touting green energy and climate change.)
It may also behoove people to take a look at what's happening in Denmark. (hint: food is about to be an issue worldwide but the Danish gvt has decided to cut back on farms/livestock because 'climate' which will put farmers out of business and make the upcoming food shortages worse. Brilliant! Again, if people aren't aware, ask yourselves why and find better news sources.)
We are not Sri Lanka. We are a first world country with a democracy in which presidents haven't "flown the coop" for 250 years.
As for the other stuff you wrote, according to Global Finance Magazine, Denmark ranks #2 out 149 countries ranked by per capita income, social support networks, healthy life expectancy, individual freedom, philanthropy, and the absence of corruption in government and business.
Guess they are doing something right. LOL. US is #16.
If you're not willing to see the light and learn, you're obviously afraid of the truth and what it would mean.
I'm not sure what "see the light" means....I posted number driven, statistically proven facts. You can view other websites to see which countries rank in the top 5. You can also see that the U.S. isn't there.
If you are an a!ternate facts or conspiracy believer, we can just agree to disagree, because that stuff isn't legitimate.

As far as solar panels, in some places they might work, but they're not for everyone.
@teganslaw I'd guess at least half the houses in my subdivision, more in the whole city, have solar panels. When you have over 300 sunny days a year in the Sun Belt, it's a viable alternative to the traditional delivery of electricity.

Why Spurt - there was just a news article about the overuse of detergents and fabric softeners. It is the manufacturers spurring this over on too. I agree about the smell factor.

@bikerbabe Some of us posters actually live here, so I will go so far as to say we are more aware than those who live out of state and base their opinions on simply disliking the state.
The baiting threads and over-generalizing about the people are proof.
I do not need a major news outlet to tell me what is going on here.
btw: I'm a Northener transplant.

Key word being news. Minimal when it comes to news. Maximum times 100 when it comes to opinion. Like a relevant wise(?), kinda old man, said in 2019 and 2020.
"I believe truth over facts"!

@hckynutjohn Interesting quote.
I always operate under the premise that if something is a fact, it is indeed the truth.
Same thing.

I keep checking this grid/ graph and am so happy that it looks good this many days into the heat wave they are having.
Am sure all of you are hopeful, too.

I have worked for an electric utility in Kansas. Here's some things you need to understand.
1. The "grid" is distribution lines (to the house), transmission lines (from plant to distribution), transformers to step the electricity down from the plant to usable in the end destination, and the generator, whether that be fossil fuel, wind, solar, nuclear, or hydroelectric. Texas is the only state not connected to the rest of the country. No power flows in or out of the state.
2. This matters because the grid must be balanced every few seconds to avoid power surges. There are employees doing that 24/7 making sure the grid stays in a steady state. If demand surges, like it's really hot, or cold, and the state doesn't have enough power, they can buy it from other neighboring areas.
3. Purchased power like that is more expensive, of course, because it's all about supply and demand. That's why bills go up in extreme weather. Do your laundry, dryer, dishwasher, etc at night, when there is less demand, and your electricity will cost less per KW.
4. Texas is not connected to the rest of the country, so when they need more, they can't buy it. Result is shortages and high prices.
5. Why is this an issue now? We are using more and more power. More people, more extreme weather, more electronics, electric vehicles, etc.
6. Build more, you say? Transmission lines run between 1 to 3 MILLION dollars per mile. Underground is more expensive. Gas power plant starts at 400 million. Nuclear plant is 6 to 9 BILLION. Wind turbines aren't as expensive, but, the wind doesn't always blow where transmission lines are. Usually a wind farm needs massive transmission construction. And coal plants aren't being built anymore because they are dirty: climate change.
7. So why electric cars?! CLIMATE CHANGE. Internal combustion engines pollute heavily.
8. It's a big, complicated problem.
