Surf - the OP said that she does not want to have a debit card.

I read that. But why not a secured VISA then instead?

Really, the problem in understanding what the problem is lies in the fact that the OP doesn't know or hasn't found out or hasn't been told what the real reason was for the decline of the Telecheck in the first place.

So we're all left to sort of working in the dark here. There must be a reason it was declined. Maybe a simple glitch at the time of purchase. Maybe the fact she hadn't used the card in a while. Maybe something popped up as a red flag - from her past or as a mistake.

We just don't know enough about the financial history of the poster or what the reason was for the decline.

Telecheck doesn't know. Her bank doesn't know. She doesn't know.

So why would any of us know? lol

There is no card to use with Telecheck.  The clerk simply runs the check through a machine and is given an okay on the check.  Or not.

The same denial snafu could happen with a credit card or debit card.  It's happened to me a few times and it recently happened to my DH.  3 times a place punched in the wrong expiration date on his card so it kept getting declined.  The bank told us that when we called about it.

My card was declined because the computers were off-line.

Re: TeleCheck Declined My Check!!

Paying by check in a grocery line is too time consuming ... all you do is annoy all the customers behind you, and the clerk as well.

Why would anyone still pay by check?

Use a credit card and pay if off every month.

There are many smaller businesses around me that are now adding on a percentage to your bill if you pay using a credit or debit card because they don't want to incur the fee they are charged.

Technically, they are out of compliance with their merchant agreement with the card company. The agreements specify that a merchant can offer a discount for cash payments, but they are explicitly forbidden from assessing a surcharge on a customer for using a credit card. I have seen this a few times and "educated" the merchant who then didn't surcharge me.

Re: TeleCheck Declined My Check!!

My stores don't use TeleCheck, they process the check like a Debit transaction.

Don't want to take off topic, but....it almost scares me to see people using a debit card at the POS.

This is the time of year where fraud is ramping up.  Please consider using a credit card instead of a direct-link-to-all-my-chkg-account-debit-card. Please, consider a credit card to pay off every month.

Re: TeleCheck Declined My Check!!

I spoke to Telecheck this morning and it is as I thought.  That account was a deviation from my history with them.  In other words, I have never used that checking account in an establishment that uses Telecheck before.

The rep asked me if I had a checking account other than that one.  I said yes and gave her that number and bank name.  She looked it up and saw that it was a well used account with the same personal information as the declined account so she synchronized the two accounts.  The account that was declined is an account near the house (two blocks)  in case we needed emergency funds and we have savings there. We've used it to pay things but Telecheck wasn't involved, I guess.

The rep said that in about a week I should have no problem writing a check from that account that would clear through them BUT...I won't be doing that.  The experience was an embarrassment that I don't want to chance again.  I don't like debit cards so I'm going to do as some suggested...use my credit card and pay it off monthly.  It never occurred to me to do that for groceries.  Who knew that Telecheck would be such a hassle, lol.

Thanks for for all of the responses.

LOL, I've never heard of telecheck.  Smiley Happy

One time I went into Smiths Grocery store and I was declined from the store.   I had just spent $500 in there and was picking up a couple things I forgot.

Apparantly they red flag you if you spend too much money in there store.   The checker, who was the day manager, asked me if I had had trouble with them before.   By then I was too ticked off to be embarrassed.  Told him I'd just been in a couple days ago with no problems.    He passed it and said he had no clue.    It was years ago and to this day I don't shop at smiths unless I need something I can't find somewhere else.

Re: TeleCheck Declined My Check!!

There was a time I wrote a check for our groceries, but it was always made out ahead of time and I needed to only fill in the amount.  It drives me nuts when someone pulls out a blank check and takes his/her sweet time writing out the check.

Now I use my Discover card to receive cash back rewards.  Some months it's 5% back of groceries.  I take my cash rewards once a year and it is always a big fat check for free money.
