We sold a lake property and moved out of (that) state. Just got word from our previous neighbors that their new bill for property taxes increased 41%

Painful.

We received a small refund.  We have our deductions set so we get a small federal refund.  And yes I know people will say we are loaning the government our money but I'm not sitting here stressing about sending a check in or complaining about what I owe.  I pay it weekly through my payroll deductions.

My property taxes went up AGAIN.  They never miss an opportunity to tax.

I don't know the details but NM is offering free college tuition, too.

As far as I know, WA isn't offering any money 💰

Think of it this way, if you choose.

I never had children, but have paid taxes for schools.  Of course I am a product of those schools, but for many years my tax contributions have funded schools for those who have one child, and for those who have ten.  And also those of us who have none.

I'm not complaining.  The future is those children.  My present is those roads that facilitate transport of the ambulance I may need.

DH works with developmentally disabled children.  His families run the gamut of income, but every single one of them needs help.  Taxes pay for some of the services he is able to help them acquire.

I don't agree with the major tax change that happened recently; the big players got the break, and they are the ones that can afford it.

Anyway, that we are here, and likely able to meet our obligations, is a joyful thing.  I've lived in very primitive situations and it is eye-opening, what we take for granted.

@tansy Which is to say they are generously offering for you and other taxpayers pay for everyone's tuition. How kind of you!

And rising taxes will go on rapidly until people paying them say "enough."  People getting the money sure won't say "stop" now that's enough.

@hckynutjohn    Just curious why are you paying city taxes where you live if you don't live in the city? And if you live in the city why can't you vote in city elections? For years I lived in the unincorporated county not the city so I could not vote in city elections. But we did not pay city taxes.  All city residents should be able to vote in city or municipal elections. Doesn't seem fair if you can't.

@50Mickey

What is another part of this story is this. I have lived in areas outside the city limits since 1972. This I didn't know until a bond issue(city) to build an Ice Rink came up in 1976.

Being hockey and ice skating is a major part of my whole life, I posted signs/canvases workers at our 7,000+ employees, and everyone I knew that ice skated, to vote to pass this bond issue.

Lo and behold when I went to my Polling place to vote! I asked the workers where the City Ballots were. Their reply, "you live outside the City Limits and cannot vote".

Now I paid City Taxes for all 3 of my motor vehicles for close to 4 years. Do you think I got a letter telling me I overpaid? Of course not. Could tell you another long story about paying City Taxes on QVC items for years, and that fiasco.

Anyways! My niece is a lawyer and one of my good friend hockey players is also an attorney. I had them both look into the "No Taxation without Representation". Come to find out the City had somehow legally extended their taxable area, to include 3 square miles outside the city limits.

They do not plow our roads nor pick up our trash, or any other city provided services. For that I had to look to the County, which takes care of our roads, but we have to pay for our own trash removal.

My situation is obviously different than your living in an unincorporated county. Not much I can do but be po"d about it. It is what it is, unfortunately for us.
