Half the time I forget the phone, as I'm really not tied to my phone at all, and all I need are my keys and the little Coach wallet.  It's just the kind that has a flap-over snap.  Then you open it and there is a divided area for cards and a 'coin purse' part that zips closed.   It's like a little smaller than two decks of cards stacked on top of each other.

If I had a coat or jacket on I can just put it in my pocket.    We probably to go a point, as we get older, that we just don't feel the need to carry EVERYTHING around all the time.  I agree that it is very freeing.  Smiley Happy

Lugging a huge bag around seems so , 'Old Lady' to me. My mother's purse had EVERYTHING in it. Address book, kleenex, first aid/sewing kit, coupons, photo album, umbrella, plastic rain bonnets, etc, etc. I think she would have won on 'Let's Make a Deal', when they asked for a hard boiled egg!

So, not necessary.

I've known many women have had things stolen because they left their bag in the break room at work, with their coats.

Re: Taking a handbag vs. not

Putting a wallet in one back pocket, a cell phone in the other and snapping my keys on my belt loop just isn't a look I'm going for.  But whatever works.

I don't carry a huge handbag and there is nothing "old lady" about my handbag. Smiley Happy

I'm with you @Lacey1!  I hate lugging a purse when I am doing errands. I put my credit cards/ID in my jeans pocket and my keys and phone in my coat or jacket pocket.  I specifically look for zip-up coat pockets when I buy outerwear, LOL.

It's a little more precarious in the summer when I don't need a coat because then I have to cram everything in the jeans pockets including my iPhone plus but it really does feel 'free'!  and it makes the errands go so much easier because I have the full use of both arms without having to always keep an eye on my purse in a cart or something.

That's why I use crossbody bags when I'm out running around.

I can't carry my phone, wallet and keys in my hand.

Yes. I had someone at work all over me about using a wristlet instead of a purse. Her small wristlet fits everything she needs, but she doesn't have to carry an asthma inhaler with her. I have a small travel crossbody that I swear is bigger on the inside, like a TARDIS. I've had it for 20 years and it's perfect for errands or days where I don't want or need a big bag.

i dont buy a lot of pants with pockets and i dont like the look of stuffing everything into a pocket. i already have enough going on in the hip and booty area i dont need to add to it. LOL

i am perfectly fine with my purse, clutch, crossbody, or tote. i have probably the largest phone available......a samsung note so that really doesnt work in a pocket anyways. i like having a few cards, cash, kleenex, coupons, mints, a small hairbrish and pick, and numerous other things at my fingertips. that makes me comfortable.

if anyone wants to stuff their things into a pocket that is fine, it isnt for me, but i will gladly give you a kleenex if you sneeze, a mint if your breath needs freshening up, or an advil or tylenol if you get a headeache. Smiley LOLSmiley Wink

ohhhhhh.......and i am not an "old lady."

Not everyone who carries a purse carries a "huge bag" nor brings everything but the kitchen sink. I have allergies and need kleenex or a hanky and I have asthma and may need my inhaler. My keychain is large as I have keys to 2 homes on it, plus car and golfcart, my mailbox and the clubhouse where I live. I prefer to have all my keys in one place.

Why do people on this board have to be so judgemental over such stupid things? If you don't want to carry a purse - great - don't then. But it doesn't make you a better person than someone who does prefer to carry one. and while I'm on a rant - do I need to tell you where you can put that term "old lady" used in a derogatory tone?

Re: Taking a handbag vs. not

If this works for you, then please let me share with you an experience my late DH had.  He placed his wallet in one of his back pockets (which was always the case) and his cell in the other.  Upon exiting an elevator at work, a guy bumped into him.  As he reached for his cell, he noticed neither his cell nor his wallet were in his pockets.  Luckily, he hadn't gone far.  He turned around and approached the guy that bumped into him and his buddy and calmly stated that he wanted them both back.  Miracle of miracles, the buddy handed them back to him.  A security officer was nearby (the exit) and witnessed this.  When he called to tell me about it, I was both grateful and a little angry at him for approaching the culprits.  Could have gone horribly wrong.

Be very mindful at all times.  One would think that taking a cell/wallet off your back pockets would be difficult - it's not.

Yikes!  This came to mind for me (one of my mantras) - Don't personalize things that are not personal.

Looks like some really took personally the preferences of others.   Just because I don't carry a purse most of the time doesn't mean that I look down on, or begrudge it, others!   I don't get the impression that anybody else does either.

Seriously - everything is NOT personal.  It's just people saying how they feel for what THEY want to do.  I didn't see anything where somebody said that everybody should do what they do.

Sorry - this is something that happens so much here and is really annoying.  Don't take somebody else's opinion as some kind of personal hit!  Nobody said that purses should be abolished just because they don't carry them.

Re: Taking a handbag vs. not

In the 3 years since I retired, I have transitioned towards smaller, lighter handbags, and even wristlets for my outings.   I love my Sak and VB bags that can be adjusted to fit close under my arm, and my Brahmin clutch bags with short handles are also perfect in the grocery store when I need hands free.   No more large heavy handbags for me.

If you need to bring the keys to your camper in another state, and your rescue inhaler to leave the house for an hour-you have other problems besides being offended by the term, 'old lady'.
