@JeanLouiseFinch With all of the storm-related stress that you are dealing with, you probably missed the part where I said, "Once safety issues are dealt with." I know that there are many safety issues - and beyond - but did not detail them. I was responding to what to me is the non-issue of "boredom" during an electric outage.

Bad storm tore through downstate Illinois this afternoon.  Lots of damage from a microburst in Bloomington/Normal area.  Illinois State University has no power and damage to at least one hospital there.

Lots of tree damage and street flooding.

@JeanLouiseFinch

A dear friend of mine lives in Indianapolis. She emailed yesterday to let us know that the floods there have been very bad. 🙏

@JeanLouiseFinch - I am so sorry you and your family are going through all this from the storm.  Will keep you all in my prayers, my friend.

@Q-Checker - I agree with you.  Boredom wouldn't be a problem for me either.  I also like to do crossword puzzles.

Re: TERRIBLE WEATHER

A running family joke is the gadgetty kind of things I give our kids as household bonus gifts at Christmas.  There always seems to be some kind of flashlight with extra features.  A few years ago we bought them rechargeable power stations, about the size of a car battery.  Lo and behold, our oldest posted in our group text about "another gem from Mom & Dad" and it was the power source.  He figured out how to use it to keep WiFi.   Then DD said they've been using it to keep their phones charged.  Yes, they can laugh, but mom can come up with a good idea now and then.

Yes, climate change is making such weather more frequent and more severe.

Indiana set a new record for tornadoes this year.  It's also a record for the most people losing power.   There are rumors that it could still be several more days before everyone is restored.

ETA - no longer rumors.  The power company posted that they anticipate 90% residential restoration by Tuesday but some customers won't be up and running again until Friday.

Our kids are managing.  Everyone is back to work.  One is able to shower and has access to food - eating out or picking up a rotisserie chicken at the supermarket. He's also able to charge devices and his power station at work.  Another is using a generator so their refrigerator is operational and they can cook.  A close relative lives nearby who has hot water so they shower there.  We have one coming here every other day to charge devices and auxiliary power, shower, do laundry, eat.  We're tired but actually enjoying it because it means bonus days with our grandkids.
