The unit does not cool my bedroom much, but I can't afford to buy another unit with higher BTU's right now. If I ever buy another one, I will know to get one with higher BTU's. Live and learn.
Apartment dwellers in hot areas have it rough. If you have central air you can't afford the electric bill. Many apts with window units have them in the living room and they don't cool the bedroom - as much because of floor plan as anything else. I was lucky that my landlord did the window unit installation for me. I had thought about the portable ones, but back in the day they were very expensive for relatively low BTUs - your predicament. I agree that over-buying BTUs is not a bad idea for the portables, since they still lag behind the window units in cooling oomph.

@Moonchilde...we have a wall unit in the LR that works great, but it only cools the LR. I suppose I could lay on the floor in front of it like my cat does. ![]()

I had an apt in Santa Ana where I did that one summer - took the couch cushions and laid them on the floor in front of the unit and slept like that - off and on all summer.
I had one kitty who would go stand pointedly in front of the floor level air conditioner when I got home from work and stared at me in case I didn't get the message. He loved the a/c blowing on him. Other cats I have had didn't like it much or at all. Strange!

@Moonchilde That's funny what your kitty did. I have two cats. My male loves the cold air blowing on him. He doesn't like the heat and jumidity. My female cat could care less. The heat doesn't bother her.
