Here in my part of the San Gabriel Valley, the car read 105 when I left work yesterday..It is only 5 am and I am considering turning on the AC already!!!
I have a rare weekend off and so much to do, but that garage is WAY too hot to go and get working on it...and too hot to plant my Fall annuals in the garden..or even weed it ...

I grew up on " the Peninsula" near SF. and have lived here since college. I have NEVER seen weather like this.
The ocean is so warm that the fog that usually comes in after three days of heat is now no where to be seen.
They work great for one room, with the door closed. I have an American Comfort one. It's from one of the shopping channels. Around 500. It puts out 13,000 BTU. Larger rooms it does take the edge off the heat, but it's not super cold,.....like with having it in one average-sized bedroom. My electricty biil wasn't high, and it's used a lot. It depends what brand you buy, and how many BTU's it puts out. A tip make sure you don't tip it. If you do, you have to let it sit for around 2 hours before using it.

@hennypenny...I bought a portable A/C unit last year for my bedroom. It doesn't cool the room very well and eats up a lot of electricity. I have a medium size bedroom. It would probably work better in a small room.
The key to window a/c is to never believe what size room they say the BTUs will cool. Size up, as it were. My bedroom is average apt size - 10x12 or thereabouts. I first had a 5000 BTU a/c and it didn't really do the job very well but was still better than nothing. It finally died after 14 years, and the one I have now is 8000 BTU. It does the job, even in weather like we're having now. It's not chilly in the room, but I can get it down to 68-70 in the wee hours of the morning. A/C (even central) only cools 15 degrees from the house temp/outside temp. In the super heat we had 2-3 weeks ago, it was 91 degrees inside when I would get home, and about 76 was the lowest I got - but still comfortable.
Your BTU's are too low. I have a 13,000 and it works great.

Thank you for all the AC tips! I wouldn't have had a clue about BTUs etc.
Didn't sleep much. It was eighty two here when I got up at seven. The plantation shutters are closed. I am so wiped out that we might pass on the farmer's mkt.
Stay cool everyone.

YMMV, but I would not pay for a 13,000 BTU window a/c for a room in a dwelling I do not own. There is such a thing as unnecessary overkill for a single room, when it will not even belong to me. 10,000 *maybe* (and yes for a larger room), but what I have does the job well, as I said. No a/c is perfect and no a/c will cool more than 15-18 lower than ambient temperature, window or central.
I was in the supermarket yesterday, and although the store's a/c and the cold (butter, creamer, yogurt) case a/c was also working - AND they had put extra blocks of dry ice into the cases as well, it was so hot.

Move to Michigan! Right now we are full bloom of our annual Apple Festival. Temps should be in the 60's with sunny skies. The trees are turning color as fast as you blink! Love my MI!

I thought we were talking about portable ones (the ones you can move room to room). I must have misread. I agree. I wouldn't spend that much for a window one, if I was renting.

Ahhh...gotcha. Yes, the roll-around type is what people are suggesting to the OP, but people have also been talking about window units, kind of intermixed - confusing 😉
When they first came out, several years ago, the wheelie a/c didn't work as advertised, but the fact that they're still around and selling so many that the prices have come down to readonable now must mean that people are happy with them.

At 9 a.m. it was 87 in Santa Monica and 82 at my house - and I live inland. Reverse weather! I'm due for 91, SM is due for 94.

Yes, I believe the OP is referring to the portable units on wheels. QVC does sell them. Mine is 8,000 BTU's. I live in an apt. The unit does not cool my bedroom much, but I can't afford to buy another unit with higher BTU's right now. If I ever buy another one, I will know to get one with higher BTU's. Live and learn.
