This mom is taking a few precious seconds to her herself.  She's eating, her baby safely under her.  Many female animals in the wild go for long periods of not eating.  Too busy to protect her precious offspring.

I recently read mother Orcas will not eat or sleep for the first month after giving birth.  She has to watch her calf to make sure it's safe and to keep it from drowning while learning to breath.  Almost all mammals do this.  The elephant constantly has to move.  The smell of blood during birth signals other animals to hunt.
