You see her once a week and if the fragrance bothers you and you say you don't know her well enough to tell her it's too strong, then just stop hugging her. That's the only solution. See her at church, extend your hand (like peace be with you).

Knowing myself, I'd just extend a hand while telling her that so sorry, I've developed a strong/serious allergic reaction to fragrances/perfumes. Causes headaches, etc. Then I'd walk away. Well, I've done that before. Better to be honest in a nice way, in the long run. .......... Years ago, I was 'stuck' in a car on the way to a wedding. The person sitting next to me had such a strong perfume on, I felt ill the entire time. And then, I was seated to another woman who was wearing the strongest fragrance........... You can guess how I enjoyed the reception and what a headache I had the next day. ...........

@ROMARY If the car scenter is one of those Car "trees" make the suggestion that they don't hve to remove the cellophane wrapper all the way off. just open the top a little bit, enough to hang the thing and have the top of the tree only be exposed leaving the rest still within the wrapper. Expose the tree as needed. Guys especially appreciate this tip.

As some people get older it is harder for them to take care of basic hygiene. Many use perfume instead of soap.

I always assume the perfumed person is unclean and trying to hide their natural scent. That is how perfume originated and was used by prostitutes.

Everyone's "nose" is different. Just because I find someone's scent stinky doesn't mean that it "is" stinky to "everyone." I had plenty of co-workers in my working life, and friends, whose perfumes gagged me - but I assume I've also worn scents others may not have liked. Everyone's body chemistry (and the way scents may or may not change on them) is different. Favorite scents have changed for me over the years.
I was taught to use scent sparingly - you're not supposed to be able to detect it more than a foot or two from the wearer. No one should take a bath in scent. But those are different issues than just not liking a particular scent.
And different from saying one is "allergic to scent" just because they don't like the smell of a particular person's scent.

You have the most interesting "assumptions"

@chihuahuamom, I think you are on the right track, with the exception of possibly giving her a scented product. I wouldn't do or say anything that might hurt her feelings, unless of course you were having a breathing problem or asthma attack as a direct result of her perfume.
And I disagree with whoever suggested that because of this woman the church should ban perfumes. There will always be some who use a scent that another might hate or that a user might overspray. But in no way do I think that perfume should be banned other than, perhaps, in a situation where there is potential for adverse reactions (medical offices, etc.)

Plus people become "nose blind" to their own fragrance, don't smell it themselves, so add more and more as time goes on. Had a friend who used that stuff that smells like roses and you'd smell her before she entered a room. It was nauseating.

This really hits home for me: They should have a some sense when getting on a plane...omg, I sat alongside a young girl who had on the strongest perfume or scented hair products I guess. I could barely breath...I put my jacket up across my face. It was terrible (she wasn't the only one!)
I came home and showered just to get the smell off me and washed my clothes.
I'm very sensitive to scents and candles.
