People were hoping for a V-shaped recovery, but given the extend of the SIP, that's not very realistic, IMO.  The Nasdaq and many tech stocks hit record highs earlier this week.  The labor report last Friday supported that theory and boosted the market, but in reality, unemployment is higher than the report suggested.

Re: Why the drop:

I'm only guessing that some folks are thinking this way:

We have to be very careful in some areas, health-wise, mainly because of recent close contact(s).

I hope I'm wrong; let's all hope I'm wrong.

Anyway, it might be a good idea to keep even more careful now, if we live in close contact areas of the country.

Wishing all of us good luck and safety.

And, therefore, better news stocks-wise.

@Linmo, I'm blanking on SIP.

@catter70

Believe me, it will go up and then the roller coaster ride will continue.  Over the long haul, I have invested when the market went down such as today's market.  At some point, I sold some stocks when they hit a certain point: made a good profit.....but it is not for the faint of heart nor for times when the cash is needed for necessities.

Continuing to watch negative news for long periods of time is debilitating and depressing: market plunges, protests, pandemic reports, stores posting bankruptcies, etc.  It becomes paralyzing and the mind cannot create proactive or survival strategies.

In my state of California, our governor told us the numbers would go up as people started going back to work.   At least in my Bay Area county, we're still required to wear masks and social distance when we go out.  I think many states have eased up on that.  If I lived in one of those states and was able to stay at home, that's what I would do.

My BIL lives in Hong Kong.  Many people have worn masks on a regular basis for quite a while, even before the pandemic started.  They have a very populous and dense city, but were able to keep their cases and deaths down.

p.s.

I'm very grateful for QVC and HSN for enabling us to watch/view various items and shows.  Heart

We can order from the safety of our homes.   Which is a huge step in the right direction for some folks, healthwise.

Jmo, of course.

@Linmo   Of course there are more cases reported because there is much more testing being done, jmo

That's what my dad said too. I've watched my 401K go up, up, up and then down, down, down. I'm going to roll it over to an IRA and let my niece manage it. She's a wealth manager for our bank. My fund isn't exactly "wealth", but I earned it, and I don't want to lose it. Since I won't need it for a couple of years, I'll hope for the best. I've learned not fret over it too much.

@desertrat8, while it's true that in those areas with more testing there will be more positives, the data can still reflect a spike by looking at certain trends in the data.
